The original Human Torch, who fought in the second World War and was a member of the Invaders, is a synthetic human created by Professor Phineas T. Horton. He is also (publishing-wise) the first ever Marvel super-hero!
This also technically makes him the first Avenger, since he predates Captain America by almost two years. Sure, Namor, The Sub-Mariner premiered at the same time, but he wasn't really a hero. That is a debate for a different time. The Torch would later become the Vision, then become the Torch again, and it took Kurt Busiek to figure out how both of them could be the same. I still can't quite grasp it. Jim is still around the Marvel Universe, but I haven't read anything recently.
