Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla (2002)

this is a fun entry in the series.  too bad about the title, since it's been used twice already.  I guess adding the "X" makes it somehow different.  it's better than the 90s MG movie, which wasn't hard to do.  it clocks in at less than 90 minutes, which is a plus.  the lousy CG recreation of the "first" Godzilla dying is a minus.

after that, we get some flashbacks to other monsters that "raided" Japan.  smart that they used Mothra, but that will be in the next review.  at the time this DVD was released, this was the only way to see a widescreen Mothra.  looked great.
same with the Green Gargantua, Gaila. now we have DVDs of both movies, which is just awesome.  it's funny, we see the masers blasting Gaira, which makes this the... what, fourth movie to use that stock footage?  the original, Gigan and Megalon all have it in there.
this is how Godzilla looks in this movie.  I like this view of him, but other times it looks too bulky, or something.  not as much as the 90s one, which looks good but didn't hardly ever fight.  at least this one attacks his foes.
a nice shot of Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla.  they do call the robot "Kiryu" throughout this and second movie, but I'm indifferent to that name.  it literally means "machine dragon" which is cool enough, but seems odd to call it that.  I wonder if they would have used the name "Ruyki" if the Kamen Rider hadn't taken it earlier.
MG throws Godzilla around.  some of the action is pretty cool, and they don't seem to be too worried about the "realism" of it, which is to the filmmakers credit.  overall, I enjoy this movie more than the previous ones.
