what is the deal with the prologue at the beginning of this movie? I've watched it a few times, and yet I never remember it, or how hilarious it is. the "scientist" who is a language professor goes on about how the Earth could be hollow. I can't believe anyone over the age of 15 believed that he was serious.
but the movie is a fun little adventure, and has some pretty iconic monsters. the story is interesting, and despite a kind of silly set up, it works well, like an ERB pulp book. who saw the downer ending coming though? what's that deal all about? I saw this a few times growing up, and the ending always surprised me.
This was the film that scared my dad s--tless as he told me! I'm sure he was a kid when he saw it back then, but my first exposure to it came courtesy of "Mystery Science Theater 3000", and I suppose my impressions of the film varied greatly from my pop's if only through a different approach (and being a young adult seeing it).
ReplyDeleteHe did tell me he did not remember that stupid intro with he college professor drawling on about underground civilizations and other pointless theories. Probably for the best it was forgettable (or the theater projectionist made the decision to cut that out of the print itself).
The way the film ends, it's like saying the girl simply couldn't drop it completely out of her mind that her home and civilization as over, she's just so attached to it, she couldn't help running straight back at an unfortunate time. It's quite a twist for an ending that made you think everything was going to be all right for those three until that earthquake happened.
