Robot MOTW- Maria

 

A lower class worker, Maria, is copied into a robot, in order to crush a rebellion of workers.  This robot assumes Maria's identity.  Rotwang is her creator, and he more than lives up to his name.  The workers and the upper class fight, but eventually they are brought together.  It's a massive movie, and I have only seen most of it once.  Faux-Maria is not really a monster, she is only doing as she was programmed.  It is really Rotwanker that is the monster, and the upper class who look down upon the lower classes.
I'm not sure, but Maria may be the first robot in the history of cinema.  She certainly is one of the most famous, and has made many appearances as an homage or outright ripoff.  I can think of one HK movie called I Love Maria and there are probably loads of others.  Roy Thomas used her at the end of the wonderful All-Star Squadron.  This was brought about by poorly thought out Crisis on Infinite Earths way back when.
