Something in the waters of the Pacific around Japan is destroying boats. Reporter Steve Martin has a layover in Tokyo, and becomes involved in the mystery. Turns out it is a giant radioactive monster, who first shows up on Odo Island. Seems like the natives know of this monster, and had made regular sacrifices to it for a long time. That is all the origin we get, though Dr. Yamane puts forth a few thoughts about it. Godzilla immediately goes into Tokyo and wipes out the city in a blaze of dynamic violence. Finally, a weapon even more terrible than Godzilla, the Oxygen Destroyer, is used to kill Godzilla. Or did it?It is interesting, in the 15 years I have been writing this blog, that I have never talked much about this movie, either version. Neither are my favorite Godzilla movies. Many fans will say it is their favorite, and also the best. I have never felt that way.
Sven had some fun stuff, though the "bad dubbing" from the vintage part was awful, Making fun of dubbing- and there is not much in this movie at all, is so 1970s. It is embarrassing that anyone thinks this is funny now. A date when that originally aired wasn't listed, I hope it was from the 70s, but I don't think so. Other than that, he was great.
Next- The Creature from the Black Lagoon
