This cartoon OVA or OAV or cartoon series or whatever you want to call it was released in 1993, and then sometime later in the US. It was released on VHS, and in dubbed form. I haven't found it available on DVD or Blu Ray, but there are laser discs out there. I never watched it all those twenty years ago, but it looked good. After having seen the first episode, it is pretty good. There are 13 episode in total. I like it more than the Giant Robo cartoon, which was far too ponderous for its own good.
It is pretty close to the live action version. There are a few tweaks to the story, and a bit more of a female presence as well. The character designs are a lot sleeker than Tezuka's originals, but not nearly like anime looks today. The English actors do a good job, but tend to over pronounce the Japanese names- constantly adding a long U sound to the U that should be aspirated.
Still, it is a good story so far.
