Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

Inventor Caractacus Potts has some wild ideas, but is a loving father.  His children, Jeremy and Jemima, want him to buy an old race car (well, the shell of it) for a whopping 30 shillings.  That is about $22 USD today.  BE that as it may, he figures out a way to earn the money, and spends several days renovating the car.  Once that happens, they go on a picnic and Potts regales them with an adventure.  He also falls in love with Truly Scrumptious.

This movie was a perennial on television when I was growing up, and it was always fun to see it.  Since it is almost 2.5 hours long, it would be on in at least a three hour time slot.  This meant the evening was full, and parents got some time to themselves- unless they watched with us.  The songs are great, though the treacly slow ones were kinda bleah.  There are only about three, so overall not too bad.  The movie moves along quickly, and is just a lot of fun.
