best super friends

I'm reading the nice Showcase Presents... Justice League v. 4, and this fine story was presented in it.  no real villain appears, just a misguided idealist, Andrew Helm, who wants the world to have more conscience and eradicate evil.

he builds a machine to do just this very thing.  and it works, for a few minutes.  Andrew spends too much time out of his body in his astral form and his physical form dies.  the machine needs constant tending and he can't do it, so it goes haywire, making things worse instead of better.

it's an interesting story, and we get some nice cameos from various villains like the Shark and the Penguin.

what's really interesting is that on page four we get drawings of five men who have tried to help the world listen to their consciences in the past: Moses, Christ, Buddha, Confucius and Mohammed.  yes, almost the entire roster of South Park's "Super Best Friends". and yes, that Mohammed is drawn right there alongside the rest of them.

I've always admired that story, and in fact a lot of the Schwartz output, for passing along genuine knowledge and philosophy coupled with the superhero shenanigans.

Seriously, can you imagine a story like that being published today? Sadly, if it were, I don't think it would be nearly so respectful.

it would be overly serious as well.
