The fourth movie in the Godzilla saga is widely considered one of the best. I think it is the best Godzilla movie ever made, despite it not being my favorite Godzilla film. almost everything about it works, the actors, the direction, the score, the effects, all tops in the movie.
Having said that, there's one small flaw in the movie, and that's at the end, when Godzilla is mysteriously menacing the children in the cave. it seems to have been an afterthought, as they had done away with the human villains and needed a way for Mothra's grubs to stop Godzilla.
and perhaps other fans have thought of this, but it would have been pretty easy to change the ending a little bit, and bring it all together quite nicely:
have Torahata (Kenji Sahara) take the kids into the cave as hostages, not realizing Godzilla was headed that way. thus our heroes have to hurry to the island and save the kids and stop Godzilla. then Torahata gets killed by Godzilla, and Godzilla gets stopped by the grubs.
make sense?
