the sequel is a better movie, overall. I never really thought about it much when watching either movie, but it's something that's always been said in critical circles.
I can hardly imagine seeing these movies back in the 30s, since even by the time I saw them in the 70s the cliches were so overdone in so many movies that they didn't seem new in the original ones.
