I'm happy to say Red Rocks as a concert venue is still great, and it's still not sparkly clean like some places I've been. Rock and roll should always have a little grime to it, give it some kind of edge, rather than be so sanitized and safe that kids of all ages are present. Not that they can't enjoy the music, but really "rock and roll has teeth. It can scratch your face off." as said by the late, great Wendy O. Williams of Plasmatics fame (that quote really scared my parents at the time when she said it in '82).
So anyway, the Zep tribute band last night was quite good. The place wasn't completely sold out, but it was packed. The band was spot on, and thankfully they didn't try to look like Robert, Jimmy, John Paul or Bonzo, they just sounded like them. They played a wide variety of songs, though nothing from Houses of the Holy. I would have liked to have heard "Over the Hills and Far Away" and "Black Dog" but all of it was quite enjoyable. Heck, there was even a theremin in use! Since I'll never see Led Zeppelin perform, this was good and I would recommend this band to anyone.
And there was a lot of smoking going on last night. Thank the gods it's an outdoor venue.
