HOtW- The Spider Queen

 

Shannon Kane was the wife and assistant to Dr. Harry Kane.  He gets killed by enemies of his country (one would think the US).. Shannon goes into his records and finds the web fluid her husband invented.  She cleverly invents bracelets that can shoot webs out from them.  She goes to war with criminals and spies.  She does all this in a rather interesting costume, and catches the eye of Detective Mike O'Bell.  He likes both of her identities, Shannon and The Spider Queen.

The Spider Queen showed up in Eagle Comics #2, in September 1941, predating Wonder Woman by a year, and Spider-Man by over 20 years.  She made three appearances, then faded away, claimed by the public domain.  A different version of her would be revived by Roy Thomas in 1993, where all the Invaders gritted their teeth for four issues.  The story and art are credited to "Elsa Lisau" but most scholars think that is a pseudonym for Louis and Arturo Cazeneuve.  I like the concept.
