Robert Crane gets mortally wounded, and his assistant Chuck Grayson places Crane's brain into a robot body. After a time of adjustment, he fights crime in his new body. He also joins the All-Star Squadron and eventually gets declared human. He eventually gets placed in suspended animation for a while, then has his brain re-transplanted into Grayson's body. Now he is human again. And related to Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing or Robin, depending on the time frame.
I never read much of the original Robotman's adventures, just in reprints here and there. So I did know who he was before Roy Thomas used him for the great All-Star Squadron book. It was a unique idea for a comic book, though Captain Future had used a robot hero earlier. I would like to read more stories about Robert Crane.
