Calvin isn't even cheating by cutting the box tops off before eating the cereal.  That tells you how much he wants this dang beanie.  Beanies like this weren't even much of a thing by the 70s, aside from seeing grown men wear them in TV shows and movies.  This was done to make the characters seem more juvenile.

No one I knew wore a beanie in the 70s.  We were all about snow caps, or toboggan hats back then.  Some of us wore the longer ones, but those always got pulled off by almost every other kid trying to be funny.  Kids are dumb, that's why they are still kids!  For those wondering, toboggans were knitted caps, usually made by mothers.
