HOTW- Amazing Man (original)

From Wiki- Amazing-Man (John Aman) is a comic book superhero whose adventures were published by Centaur Publications during the 1930s to 1940s in the Golden Age of Comic Books. Historians credit his creation variously to writer-artist Bill Everett[1] or to Everett together with Centaur art director Lloyd Jacquet.[2] Amazing-Man first appeared in Amazing-Man Comics #5 (Sept. 1939)—there were no issues numbered #1–4.[3]  John Aman is an orphan from the West, chosen for his "superb physical structure" to be raised by benevolent monks in Tibet for the first 25 years of his life.[11] Each member of The Council of Seven, as the monks are known, trained him to a superhuman degree of physical and mental ability, while also giving him the ability via a chemical solution to disappear into a cloud of green mist, earning him the secondary title of the Green Mist.[12] His new powers include super-strength, invulnerability and speed, as well as healing and telekinesis.[13]  After receiving his final tests, he is sent into the world to use his skills and abilities to do good. Opposing Aman, as he was often known, is his nemesis the Great Question, a disgruntled member of the Council of Seven.[14] Aman's sidekick is Tommy, the Amazing Kid, and he's also aided by "ace girl crime investigator" Zona Henderson.[13]  Back to me:

Mike Peters passed away today.  I never saw The Alarm, but almost did.  They were supposed to open for U2 at Red Rocks in 1983, but inclement weather stopped them.

Calvin and Hobbes 01-02-1986

Some people would say that I was always partial to a certain hair color with women.  Perhaps in my younger years that might have been true.

We are a week late, but no way was I watching Willard again.  Once was enough.  Not that it is bad, just not my cuppa.

TV Ads- Dagora, the Space Monster

I love finding all the old television ads for monster movies on the internet.  I did add some color to this one, since the zine is published in color these days and it helps make it stand out a bit more.  I don't recall seeing too many of these in the mid-to-late 70s, by the time I was actively looking for monster movies.  It seems they disappeared completely by the 80s, as cable started the homogenization of the country's television stations.  I am sure places still got these, but ol' Fossil Bed sure didn't!  I am also grateful to people who saved them, since who would have even thought that would be a thing.  Certainly not many kids of my vintage.

490. Eight Drunken Immortals, ONE Drunken Master!

It isn't easy to review classic kung fu movies that many people have seen.  This is an example.

HOTW- Amazing Man (DC)

From Wiki- Will Everett is a promising young African-American Olympian who competed in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Following this, he becomes a janitor at a laboratory owned by Terry Curtis. After an accident where his equipment explodes, Everett develops the ability to mimic whatever properties he touched.[2] The Ultra-Humanite initially employs Everett as a henchman along with Curtis (as Cyclotron) and Deathbolt.[3] He later reforms and joins the All-Star Squadron.[4][5] During Crisis on Infinite Earths, Amazing-Man is among the heroes chosen by the Monitor to stop the Anti-Monitor.[6][7] He loses his original abilities and gains the ability to manipulate magnetism. In the 1950s, J. Edgar Hoover reveals Everett's secret identity to the public, which endangers his family. He becomes involved in the Civil Rights Movement after his nephew is murdered before dying from cancer.[8][9] Back to me:

Flag of Iron/Spearman of Death (1980)

From Wiki- The respected and noble ‘Iron Flag’ clan are at constant quarrel with their bitter rivals, the notorious ‘Eagles’, who oversee various illegal activities in the town. To resolve these matters, the chiefs of both clans agree to meet in person, accompanied by their most formidable fighters. The Iron Flag clans hierarchy suspect that the Eagles will not act in good faith, so, at the behest of ‘Iron Tiger’ Tsao Feng (Lu Feng), they invite the mysterious, hitman-for-hire, the ‘Spearman’ (Lung Tung Sheng) as back-up in case things go sour.  Back to me:

"Flash of Two Worlds"

From Wiki, of course- "Flash of Two Worlds!" is a landmark[1] comic book story that was published in The Flash #123 (Sept. 1961). It introduces Earth-Two, and more generally the concept of the multiverse, to DC Comics.[2] The story was written by Gardner Fox under the editorial guidance of Julius Schwartz (whose subsequent autobiography was titled Man of Two Worlds), and illustrated by Carmine Infantino. In 2009, DC Comics released a new digitally remastered graphic novel collection, DC Comics Classics Library: The Flash of Two Worlds. It features the classic flagship story and other subsequent pre-Crisis Flash material.  Back to me again (and I don't care about remasters very much):

HOTW- Zatanna

From Wiki- In her original origin, Zatanna was born to human Giovanni Zatara and Homo magi Sindella, inheriting her mother's natural affinity for magical powers. Six months after her birth, her mother disappeared and was presumably dead, leading her to be raised by her father. Growing up to be a stage magician with genuine magical powers and modelling herself similarly to her father, Zatara later mysteriously disappears, leading her to travel abroad to perfect her magical craft while searching for her father.[7][8] Unknown to her, the details of her parents' disappearance were revealed overtime; her mother would later return to her people, a clan of Homo magi known as the "Hidden Ones" and her father was cursed by evil sorceress Allura that would kill both himself and his daughter should he see her again, leading him to reluctantly distance himself from her.[7][9][8]. Created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Murphy Anderson, Zatanna first appeared in Hawkman #4 (November 1964). When she is introduced, she is on a quest to find her father Zatara who made his first appearance in Action Comics #1 but had not been published regularly for several years.  Back to me:

Calvin and Hobbes 01-01-1986

I don't think I ever asked my parents questions like this.  I rarely lost television privileges overall, though occasionally I lost reading privileges.

Kimba vs Kumonga (giant spider)!

We are at the penultimate podcast of Kimba the White Lion!  This is from the 47th episode, where a giant spider of unknown origin invades the jungle.  I bet the Japanese dub is a lot darker than the US one is, simply due to the subject matter.  I mean, the arachnid has webbed up many of the animals before Kimba ever shows up.  If that doesn't make one think awful things are about to happen, nothing will.

477. The Death dealing Deadly Mantis!

More to come!

476. Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978) review!

Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978)

From Wiki- Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (Chinese: 蛇形刁手) is a 1978 Hong Kong martial arts action comedy film directed by Yuen Woo-ping in his directorial debut. It stars Jackie Chan, Hwang Jang-lee, and Yuen Woo-ping's real life father, Yuen Siu-tien. The film's plot is about Chien Fu (Jackie Chan), an orphan who is bullied at a kung fu school, meeting an old beggar, Pai Cheng-tien (Yuen Siu-tien), who becomes his sifu (teacher) and trains him in Snake Kung Fu. HOTW- The Scarlet Witch

From Wiki- The Scarlet Witch and her twin brother Quicksilver debuted as a part of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in X-Men #4 (March 1964). They were depicted as reluctant villains, only wanting safety from persecution and uninterested in team leader Magneto's plans for global domination. The Scarlet Witch is depicted as calm and submissive, like many female comic book characters of the time.[12] Her costume was composed of a bathing suit with straps, opera gloves, short boots, a leotard covering her body, a superhero cape, and a wimple, all of which were colored in shades of red. She was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.[13]  Lee and Kirby also produced the Avengers comic book, composed of Marvel's most prominent solo heroes at the time. Save for Captain America, Lee and Kirby eventually had all the Avengers leave to focus on their individual careers, replacing them with former villains from other comics who did not have a series of their own: the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver from X-Men, and Hawkeye from Iron Man's adventures in Tales of Suspense. The team was known as "Cap's Kooky Quartet".[14] Although common in later years, such a wide-scale change in the roster of a superhero group was completely unprecedented (usually, superhero teams only exchanged one or two members at a time rather than almost the entire roster at once).[15] Lee and the following Avengers writer, Roy Thomas, hinted that other Avengers were romantically interested in the Scarlet Witch. The twins later leave the team after a crossover with the X-Men.  Back to me with a vengeance!

Sven- Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958)

From Wiki- Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is a 1958 independently made[4] American science fiction horror film directed by Nathan H. Juran (credited as Nathan Hertz) and starring Allison Hayes, William Hudson and Yvette Vickers. It was produced by Bernard Woolner. The screenplay was written by Mark Hanna, and the original music score was composed by Ronald Stein. The film was distributed in the United States by Allied Artists as a double feature with War of the Satellites.  The Allied Artists television version runs 75 minutes instead of 66, including a long printed crawl at the beginning and end, repeated sequences, and hold-frames designed to optically lengthen the film's running time. The film's storyline concerns the plight of a wealthy heiress whose close encounter with an enormous alien in his round spacecraft causes her to grow into a giantess, complicating her marriage which is already troubled by a philandering husband.[5]  Attack of the 50 Foot Woman is a variation on other 1950s science fiction films that featured size-changing humans: The Amazing Colossal Man (1957), its sequel War of the Colossal Beast (1958), and The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957); in this case, a woman is the protagonist.[6] The film's popularity and cult status[7] has spawned numerous parodies and homages in popular media. HOTW- The Vision (Marvel)

From Wiki- Founding member of the Avengers and scientist/adventurer Hank Pym (also known by the code names Ant-Man, Giant-Man, and Goliath) decides to experiment with creating artificial intelligence, using a combination of computer programming and recordings of human brainwave patterns. Hank's hope is to create a robot who does not just simulate emotions but can truly feel and achieve emotional growth. His work results in the creation of a robot called Ultron who immediately turns on him and escapes. Ultron then upgrades himself repeatedly, finally creating a formidable robotic form which can allow him to do battle. Hating his father and wishing to dominate Earth, Ultron makes attacks against the Avengers, both on his own and through the use of agents such as the Masters of Evil team. Ultron's first ally is Eric Williams, the Grim Reaper, a villain who hates the Avengers because he blames them for the death of his brother Simon Williams, the ionically empowered hero Wonder Man (Eric and the Avengers were unaware at the time that Wonder Man was alive and only in a coma-like state).[15] Inspired by how strongly Eric is motivated by his connection to his brother, Ultron decides he wants family too.[16] To create an android "son", Ultron first tracks down the body of the original android Human Torch, a Golden Age hero and android described by his creator Phineas T. Horton as a "synthetic man", being replica of an adult human male with synthetic organs, blood, tissue, muscle, and skeleton. Unknown to the living robot, the time villain called Immortus uses his powers to duplicate the original Torch moments before Ultron's arrival, creating twin copies. While Ultron takes one deactivated Human Torch back to his lab, the other deactivated Human Torch remains behind, waiting to be reactivated. Immortus did this as part of larger plans he had to manipulate the Avengers.[17]  Back to me:
