The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends

When I was growing up Rocky and Bullwinkle were ubiquitous.  The show was on in every area- yes, even here in CO (I think KWGN Channel 2 aired it early on weekdays) and everyone knew who Moose and Squirrel were, not to mention Boris, Natasha and even Fearless Leader.  I am not sure when it faded from the airwaves, since it was probably after I was in high school.  Still, their influence lingered for so many years, that in the mid 80s there was a sudden surge of interest, so much so that a two-hour retrospective was shown at a theater in Boulder, CO.  It is fun to watch these episodes now in order, since I never once saw a full story.

From Wiki- The Wild Wild West told the story of two Secret Service agents: the fearless and handsome James West (played by Robert Conrad), and Artemus Gordon (played by Ross Martin), a brilliant gadgeteer and master of disguise. Their mission was to protect President Ulysses S. Grant and the United States from all manner of dangerous threats. The agents traveled in luxury aboard their own train, the Wanderer, equipped with everything from a stable car to a laboratory.

The Get Smart Handbook

All you want to know about Get Smart!  This book is really fun as well.  It is about 30 years old now, as it was first published in 1993.  The good thing about it is Mr. Joey Green gets to talk to all the principle players who were still alive then.  He also didn't have to endure the short lived- seven whole episode- of the 1995 sequel series, Get Smart (wow, clever title there, Fox).  The book is written in the style of an actual spy handbook, and it's very funny.  I never knew it was written, but got the first two season pretty cheaply from Amazon and wanted to know more about the creation of the show.  This popped up right away.  My copy is complete, but definitely well loved, so it was worth the price I paid for it.

I've had this DVD set for several years, but haven't watched them in almost as long. So I thought it was time to revisit them and watched the first one the other day. It sure is a lot of fun and Austin Powers sure borrowed a lot from the movie.

Looney Tunes: Back in Action (trailer)

Just watched this fun movie again. For the life of me I can't figure out why this wasn't a huge hit. It's way better than the one that Bugs and company did with Michael Jordan, that's for sure. I mean, the trailer alone is better than that entire film.

Everything Or Nothing trailer

This is a very good documentary on the greatest spy of them all, 007, James Bond. I'm not a huge Bond film fan, but this doc is really well done, talking to almost all of the actors who have played the character. There really aren't that many of them.

Despicable Me 2 (2013)

For a wide variety of reasons I didn't see this in the theater when it came out.  Of course, I didn't see the first one either, so there is an historical precedent.  So I'm watching it now, and just about 17 minutes into it I'm quite enjoying it, despite the score being less than memorable (again).

Our Man Flint (1966)

in response to the hugely popular James Bond movies, every studio wanted to make a spy film.  some of them are serious, some of them are not.  most of the Bond films weren't that serious either.  those are the best ones, anyway, realizing that the whole genre was rather silly to begin with (much like superhero movies).  and there are tons of them, both serious and silly (and many that tried to be one and ended up the other, though bad comedy is never good).

I did that whole month on spy movie trailers, and I bet the trailers were better than most of the actual movies.

The Kids from Caper - "Phantom of the Drive-In"

this is actually the third part of the episode. anyway, this show, "The Kids from C.A.P.E.R." ran on NBC starting in the fall of 1976. it was done by Don Kirshner, and fashioned after the Monkees. the Kids were sleuths and crime fighters, and told corny jokes and sang pleasant if bland and innocuous pop songs. it has a small and loyal following. the acronym was odd, as that fad had faded years before.

I do enjoy the Austin Powers movies, but I liked the first one the best, when Austin was the joke, rather than being part of the ongoing story. there's a sweetness about the first one missing in the other two, even if they are funnier. and I'm no real fan of gross out humor, which became inexplicably popular about 1998 or so. ugh.

In Like Flint (1967)

started the month with Derek Flint, and now we end it with him and the fun sequel. these have all been enjoyable trailers this month, and it's made me want to see more spy movies than I have in the past. as I've said before, I tend to gravitate toward the spoofs and ripoffs more than the actual "real" ones, like James Bond or whoever is actually a serious spy.

Spy Shadow intro

this is a slight departure from the standard spy movies, but variety is the spice of life, right? I never saw this cartoon growing up. it was paired with Super President, which is silly and yet very enjoyable. as is this one. Richard Vance, agent of Interspy, is able to have his shadow separate from himself to help out on special cases.

Deadlier than the Male (1967)

I watched this Bulldog Drummond adaption a while ago, see this post here, but really didn't review the movie at all. the DVD looked great, even if it wasn't an anamorphic print. still, who knew you would find a copy of this movie at all?

Karate Killers (1967)

never saw The Man From U.N.C.L.E. growing up, but heard and read a lot about it as a kid. watched the first few episodes on DVD and thought they were fun, but really didn't do much for me. I know people that love the show and swear it's awesome, but it's all about when you see it.

Spy in Your Eye (1965)

another spy spoof from Italy, this time it's Brett Halsey as Bert Morris, secret agent Z.3 (which is kind of a cool nom de guerre). this difference is he's got a spy camera in his eye, making him the first bionic spy out there.

Secret Agent Fireball (1965)

another one from Italy. they must have cranked out more of these than any other genre. our hero is Robert Fleming, and this is the first of three movies featuring him, and the first two star Richard Harrison (of  The Four Assassins fame).

Operation Kid Brother (1967)
