HOTW- Marine Boy

 

From Wiki- Marine Boy is an extremely intelligent, strong and athletic boy of perhaps 13 to 15 years of age. He is a martial artist (episode 1, 2, 8, 16), football player (ep. 17), and an accomplished pilot (ep. 10) whose talents are further enhanced by the inventions of his father, Dr. Mariner. He has a great affinity with sea life, most particularly with a white dolphin he calls Splasher who Marine Boy occasionally seems able to communicate with quite clearly (ep. 11, 12, 17, 28). (MB also wears a ring with a dolphin-calling whistle in it (ep. 2, 4, 16).) It is perhaps because of his skills along with his avid insistence to get involved with trouble that his father, along with Professor Fumble, invented for him the red wetsuit which protects and equips Marine Boy, allowing for him to use his talents to perform dangerous duty. With his headstrong personality, he hardly seems able to avoid it.

It was never my intent, but I have kind of turned writing about Marine Boy into a cottage industry.

The fantastic fourth edition should hopefully be on sale in the next day or two.  This time it is in the same format that long out of print first edition was, and it is also in color.  And it has more information in it!  I even gave a translation the old college try.  However, if I am really off base, feel free to let me know and I will make changes.  I was kind of surprised at how many words I actually recognized, though.

I recently found out there was a Marine Boy coloring book out when the show was being aired originally.  I learned of it from Toy Ventures, and then was able to purchase a copy as a PDF from Retro Reprints, who do loads of such things.  It is pretty decent, and I would have loved having it at the time.  I may get some more in the future, and see about printing them out. Or not.  They are never as much fun as I remembered, though.  Some coloring books are better than others, though.

Back to where it all started... I am going to do a new edition of Marine Boy, like the very first one.  It will ONLY be Marine Boy.  It has been updated since even the last edition two years ago.  This time will be in color, though, and have some more information about the show.  Toy-Ventures has an issue about Marine Boy and the wide variety of merchandise that was available in both the US and Japan.  There was even a coloring book here in the US.  I have also corrected a few typos here and there.

In case anyone has forgotten why I actually started this blog, here's some more Marine Boy.  I don't actually recall which episode it is... oh wait, who has a handy dandy book to look it up?   THIS GUY!  It appears to be episode titled "The Wild Monster Plants" but I am just basing that on the picture placement.  It is not.  It is the Great Plankton Menace."  The plankton is riled up and deadly.  It is like a red tide, but seems to have a collective intelligence.  Don't worry, Marine Boy and the Ocean Patrol take care of everything by the end of the episode.

Random Marine Boy Post

Every once in a while I like to post about Marine Boy, which was the reason I started this blog in the first place.  This is my favorite episode, mostly because it has several giant monsters monsters in it.  Superheroes and monsters?  I loved it!  It also helped that Channel 20 WDCA aired this episode twice in a row, which embedded it in my mind.  This happened with The Nightmare Narcissus episode with Kimba the White Lion as well, though I don't think it was two days in a row.  At the time, I was annoyed because I wanted to see different episodes, but I am glad I saw them more than once now.

MOTW - Marine Monster of the Deep

 

Thaddeus E (the E stands for Evil) Brackish has a murder of monsters he plans to use to conquer the seven seas.  In addition to being able to breath under water, they can fly and have a fiery breath.  How that works underwater is a mystery to me.  It's a good thing Marine Boy and the Ocean Patrol were around to stop Mr. Brackish.   You just can't go wrong with mermaids, monsters and exploding boomerangs!

Xenorama #30- Marine Boy!

At long last, the third and (hopefully) final edition of my Marine Boy book is available on Amazon.  This blog started in 2007, and became the official Marine Blog in September of that year.  I had just spoken to the late Peter Fernandez about the show.  What a great guy he was!  I wish I had finished at least one version of the book before he passed on.  I think he would have enjoyed it.

I've been watching Marine Boy episodes again, and boy howdy do they look great.  It's nice that they are about 25 minutes long.  That makes the episode move at a good pace, rather than fast pace a shorter episode would entail.  They are a lot of fun.  I wonder if Marine Boy has any kind of "real" name, since he is only referred to as Marine Boy.  By everyone.  Including his father!  Perhaps his name is Marin, which sounds like Marine.  The world may never know, and the world will wonder why I think about such things, I am sure.

MOTW- marine robot spider

This creature was featured in the opening to Marine Boy, but never made it into an episode.  Which is too bad, as its pretty cool looking and would have been a  cool monster for him to fight.  I kept waiting to see it, but it only showed up in the credits.  This was the same thing with the other monster, the underwater centipede.  Good thing the show was chock full of other cool monsters and robots!  It's not really a spider, since it only has four legs, but who's gonna argue with a fearsome robot?

Mazinga Z

 

    Who knew there would be so many classic Japanese cartoons available on home video, either DVD or Blu Ray now?  I had those Hong Kong DVD sets of both Mazinga Z and Devilman with their wonderfully off English subtitles.  Now they are both available, along with several other shows.  It's just amazing.  I've got the entire run of Gatchaman shows to get through now, and several other sets that I haven't opened yet.

Marine Boy book 1st and 2nd Editions

Soon the second edition of Marine Boy will be published, it's in the process of being reviewed now but should be approved later on today.  I hope!

It will be easy to distinguish editions, as the second edition is smaller, has more pages and a different back cover.   And by more pages, I mean A LOT more- nearly triple the page count from the first edition.  So I'm not really worried about any confusion there.  I'm a lot happier with it being in a smaller format, I must say.  I think the pictures look better overall.  I'm very pleased with the way this came out.  After almost 20 years of work, it's about time to call this finished!

Denver Comic Con 2016

I have been asked to be on a panel this year at the Denver Comic Con  This will be pretty fun, as it's about kaiju, or as we call them, monsters.  I've got the plan of the panel, though it seems pretty ambitious for an hour or so- lots to talk about in a short amount of time.  It is geared to mostly upcoming projects, which means I may have a minority view about such things.  But we will see how it goes.

update Marine

Come on, we all wanted that boomerang!  It almost always returned to his hand when thrown and it had a super electric charge.  It was as good as Cap's shield!  It also worked perfectly underwater as well as on land which pretty much made it the perfect weapon for anyone, since there were a few episodes where different people would use the boomerang to great effect., including Splasher.  This should come as no surprise to anyone, since the dolphin had already shown he could walk on land nearly as well as most people.

Marine Boy v2 update

Here I thought I was almost ready to go with the update to the book.  Turns out I was wrong as the computer gremlins ate every file with the name Marine Boy on it, aside from the pictures and my original notes.  Fortunately I don't have to write everything all over again, but I am really bummed I lost all of my updates.  On the plus side I'll have better pictures now, with all of the DVD sets in my collection. And I do still have the wonderful cover.  I may design a new back cover as well, since the original one isn't that great.

Well, thanks Amazon, for thinking I'd be interested in my own book, which I already have a few copies of.  Of course, if anyone does want to order this version before it goes OOP, I'd suggest clicking right here!  The new version is going to have more information, more pages and more pictures than before, plus a new forward that it never had!  It will be well worth a new investment, I must say.  I should thank Amazon for reminding me of this and letting me be able to plug it again.

Marine Boy in three DVD sets

I finally got Marine Boy "season" 2 yesterday, which means I now have all 78 episodes in three DVD sets and all in amazing quality.  I'm amazed (and happy) that these three sets take up less room than two standard VHS tapes, since I hauled around about 16 of those tapes (in cases) for years and I can carry these three sets in one hand.  Even when I had the DVDrs of the show it was 16 of them and they still took up a lot more room than these do.  I am really pleased that Warner Home Video decided to release all three "seasons".
