                    Here's another take on my favorite Godzilla movie.  It has been since the first time I saw it on the telly way back in 1974 or so.

Well, I had planned on reviewing The Creature from the Black Lagoon today on the podcast, but since next week Sven is airing Monster Zero, I figured I had better review this fine film today, and do the Creatch on Tuesday.  I have written about the movie a lot here, so I will not do that for this post.  It is a fine movie, and I think I like it a bit more than Monster Zero, but only because I have seen it longer.

Belgium Godzilla vs the Thing

 As we gear up for Xenorama's celebration of the 60th anniversary of Godzilla vs. the Thing, we have found and been provided to us many posters and stills from all around the world.  Some are based on the Japanese poster and some are based on AIP's US poster.  Some are a weird combination of both, like this one from some unknown country.  We do not recognize the language, at least at this point in time.  It is not German, that's for sure.

This was a very common still for the US monster mags to show back in the 60s and 70s.  It is a great shot that doesn't exist anywhere in the movie.  These kind of promotional stills used to confuse me as a kid, since I was not aware of airbrushing for quite a while.  I mean, there was the shot of King Kong fighting both Gorosaurus and Mechanikong in the snow.  That led to speculation of another Toho Kong movie no one had seen yet.  Now I find them a lot of misleading fun, that is for sure.

MOTW- Lepirax

 

Lepirax is a giant mutated butterfly.  We know how that how that is going to end.  Butterflies never do well when fighting Godzilla, and this one is a lot smaller than Mothra.  So it can't even fight Godzilla properly, though it does do a number on a S.H.I.E.L.D. helicopter.  But that is about it.  Much like Centipor, Lepirax is not immune to atomic breath.  It is rare to find a creature that can take a blast, though.  Rodan is one of the few Earth monsters that.  To add insult to injury, Godzilla stomps the ashes of the bug after said blast burns it to a crisp.

Facts and Figures of Japanese Monster

Constantine Furman has done it again.  This book contains so much information about these movies and monsters.  It is over 300 pages of greatness.  This information covers various titles of movies, along with translations of the titles.  There are also so many lyrics from the various song in these movies.  The reader gets them in Japanese (with English words) and then the English translations.  Now you can sing along in either language to Miyarabi's Prayer.  It is also peppered with Furman's sense of fun.  His commentary is witty and very on point.  He knows when to add a little fun at exactly the right time.

Mogera appeared in the epic outer space invasion movie The Mysterians (1957).  It's sort of explained that it was used to dig the base around the Mysterians Base, but it really is just there to add a cool looking monster to the movie.  What was unknown to US audiences for a long time is that there were two Mogera in the movie.  The second digs under a Markalite and gets crushed when the tunnel caves in.  I can see why it was edited out of the movie, since it didn't add anything to the final battle.

Look at this amazing cover.  It's exactly what I wanted for this homage/tribute  to the most influential Famous Monsters issue in my life, #114.  It's got great new articles about all the great Japanese movies from the original zine, and many more!  Movies like the Majin trilogy, Destroy All Planets, you name it, it's probably in there.  It was fun to re-read the issue again, which I hadn't done in quite some time, as it's about to disintegrate.

Normally I do this one ON Hallowe'en, but since I'm watching the movie right now on an amazing looking blu ray DVD (it's the rare one commentary, yes, it's just a little bit superior) so of course I'm watching the AIP dub. I sure wish I had seen this as a kid in the theater, but this much awesome would have probably destroyed my mind at that time.

Godzilla vs. The Thing

Still not my favorite Godzilla movie, but dang this trailer is amazing for it's complete dishonesty in the title, and yet complete honesty about what you will be getting in the movie. AIP sure knew how to market a movie, no question there. It's too bad the US DVD presentation was not quite as good as the movie.

Ghidrah! The Three Headed Monster!

I know I've written about this movie and trailer before, but like I said we are pretending those don't exist at the moment. This was the first Godzilla movie I ever owned, in 8mm form. It was also the first Rodan and Mothra movie I ever saw, so it has that going for it as well. It's one of my favorite Godzilla movies.

Mothra's Day

Isn't every day Mothra's Day?  It certainly should be.  I haven't watched the Simpson's regularly now for several years, but I'm not one of those fans who proudly proclaims the shows best years are way back.  Still, it's rather hard to believe that the show has been on for 25 years.  I know that beats Gunsmoke's record now.  It's the "Longest-running animated American series, longest running American sitcom and longest running scripted prime-time series."  All that is pretty amazing, overall, and I think it's fair to say it's an institution now.

Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992, English)

I remember seeing this trailer for the first time. I'd already seen a camcorder copy of the movie, but the thought of seeing it dubbed into English was exciting. It's not a great Godzilla movie by any stretch, but it's enjoyable. I really should watch this again some time.
