Godzilla eats Snickers

I do think these sort of commercials are kinda dumb, though I certainly understand personality changes because of hunger. It even happens to a mild mannered person such as myself on occasion. I also don't eat candy bars very often in general, so it's not like I'm going to rush out and buy one because of this commercial. Since it's Godzilla, this one is pretty funny.

John Carter (2012) pt 1

I'm about 50 minutes into this movie, and so far, reddest bit about the Red Planet is the beginning.  Kind of odd, I'd say, but I wasn't surprised.

Groovie Ghoulies - The Lizard King

Hey, I love BOC's "Godzilla" as much as anyone (except maybe Mr. Owari himself). It's the song the proved rock n roll and giant monsters go together naturally. And then I discovered all sorts of bands that sang about monsters, or took their names from monster movies. Not all of them are metal, either.

Gokaiger guns

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day, and he was deploring "gun violence" on television.  I would guess he also meant movies as well, but he didn't really specify.

It got me to thinking though, as I was watching Gokaiger later, just what constitutes "gun violence"?  The pirates in this show for kids certainly use their very fanciful space guns a lot, but only on the bad guys, especially their henchmen.  One shot usually takes them down, and there's never any blood shown.  The henchmen are or were human at one point, just an aside.  Only the lead bad guy has been shown bleeding from a bullet or whatever these guns fire, and it was literally only a flesh wound.

"Godzilla" trailer

I am sure I am in the minority here, but I'm not overly impressed with the new trailer. Sure, it's "epic", dark and gritty, but so was the original. And if we are honest, the trailers for the '98 film were pretty nifty as well. I'm also not particularly thrilled with this new look for Godzilla. Sure, it's better than the '98 version, but what wouldn't be? I'm hoping I like the movie, but I'm going in with very low expectations.

RIP Harold Ramis

It's sad news that actor/writer/general all around good guy Harold Ramis passed away today. I've seen quite a few of the movies he's written, and a few he's acted in. His commentary on the GHOSTBUSTERS DVD is hilarious and insightful, one of the few commentaries I've greatly enjoyed.

more Jet Jaguar

Just a random sampling of Jet Jaguar grabs from the ill fated Godzilla vs Megalon DVD from Media Blasters.  I sure wish Titra/Titan had been able to dub the final four Godzilla movies,  as they wouldn't get nearly as much flack as they do now.

Gokaiger Episode 1 [Subbed]

started watching this series again from the beginning. Not going to review all the previous episodes, since you can just click and find them if you want. I really like it still, though. It's hard to believe it's been over for two years now. I'll have to check out the newer dinosaur themed sentai also.

JLI meets JSA

I finished the last twelve episodes of The Brave and the Bold, and for the most part really enjoyed them, though I wish 'Mazing Man was replaced with anything else.  Seriously, what is his appeal?  The character got rave reviews when he had his own comic, but I never saw the appeal.  Give me Ma Hunkel any day.  Anyway, I'll discuss that episode and the series finale later on, since I may need to rewatch them just to make sure I can process it all.  Fourth wall breaking can  be a bit disconcerting.

Green Lantern eps 1 and 2

I have not watched this series, so this will be my first viewing as well. I miss 2D animation a lot, this just looks like every other cg cartoon out there. Apparently this series deals with all sorts of different colors of Lanterns (an idea I entertained when I was about 8 and gave it up as silly even then). I'm not particularly a fan of that idea, either. Sinestro's yellow ring was unique. Now? Not so much.

MagiRanger episode 19 "The Magic Lamp"

Only in the world of Super Sentai do you get talking, singing magical cats from a genie bottle.  And it all makes perfect sense in that world.  Mahō Sentai Magiranger is a pretty fun show.  Five siblings battle the forces of Infershia to save the world.  Pretty standard sentai fair, but these are magicians.

The Phenomenauts - She'll Launch

This is a really cool and fun video. The band is great, one of the sci-fi superhero bands us nerds are drawn to naturally, much like the Aquabats. The two bands play together quite regularly, but have a different enough style and sound to make it not repetitious. Much like the JLA and the Avengers.

Marine Boy DVD set vol 1 review

I finally got this set the other day.  I haven't watched all  26 episodes, but the ones I have watched are just amazing.  I can hardly believe that this series is now on DVD (well, 52 episodes so far, anyway).  When I spoke to the late Peter Fernandez all those years ago he told me he was still trying to get the series back on the air.  He always believed in the show, even though Speed Racer was much more well known and famous overall.  I know it's redundant, but he was a great man.

So here's the case, which holds all three discs in it in a nice comfortable way.  The Toho Icons of Sci-Fi set had their three discs in paper covers instead of this way.  Lame.  So score one for Marine Boy in that respect.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - The Eminem Interview

This made me laugh out loud on several times. Sure, it's Al editing ol' Marshal's answers to make the answers even funnier. I can't say I'm any kind of Eminem fan, he's always come across as an intelligent kind of douche. I wonder if he's got any sense of humor, especially if he saw this.

Marine Boy The Complete Second Season

The second 26 episodes of Marine Boy are now available!  I just recently ordered the first "season" and was wondering if the set had been successful enough to get the next two sets out.  Of course, since it's Made on Demand, I guess it doesn't have to sell a million sets to insure the rest of the series release.  The preview looks gorgeous, that's for sure.  I hope the rest of the set matches it.  I've heard really good things about the first season (and yes, season is a misnomer, since it was just 78 episodes that were syndicated back in the day, enough to run five days a week for quite a while).  I'm looking forward to watching the episodes again.

It was 50 years ago today...

Yes, I know it was really yesterday the Beatles appeared on US TV for the first time, but of course I'm a day off. I decided to go with how I found out about the Beatles, which was through this great movie called "The Yellow Submarine". It was on late night TV, up against "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" and after switching between the two of them for a while the Beatles beat the apes.

Starring the Voices of...

Andrea Romano is amazing.  She has to be one of the best voice casting directors in the world, if not the best.  I never paid attention to such things until the JLA animated series showed up, and she had such great casting ideas (Hawk and Dove's voices are inspired, that's all I am gonna say about that now).

Village of the Damned (1960) trailer

Based on the book "The Midwich Cuckoos" this is a pretty nifty little movie about children with odd powers. I'd almost think it was an influence on Stan Lee when he created the X-men a few years later. I liked it a lot more than the sequel "Children of the Damned". The moody black and white photography helps, as do those creepy English voices of the kids.

Marvel Essentials and DC Showcases

I have said, on this blog and other places, I don't read comic books any more.  This isn't quite true.  I should say I don't read NEW comic books any more.  I have a LOT of these fine reprint books, from both DC and Marvel.  These are great books, lots of stories for about $20.  Back before there were comic book stores (and comic readership was in the millions) you could never be sure to find an issue of a comic you were looking for.  I had a series of stores I would hit on a regular basis, hoping that I would find all the comics I was reading.  This of course only applies to comics from about 1973 on.  The only way I got to read older comic books was from friends who's older siblings had a collection.

The Sisters Of Mercy - This Corrosion

This is a great song. It was the first time I had ever seen or heard of The Sisters of Mercy. I also didn't know that Meatloaf producer Jim Steinman produced this song. It's not nearly as over the top as other Steinman songs, which means it's a good co-production. I liked the song so much I bought the tape "Floodland".

The Siege of Starro pt 2

Remember this post from two and a half years ago?  Well, I finally got the final two DVD sets for Batman: The Brave and the Bold and season 2 part 2 starts with the two parter.    I actually don't remember seeing the JLA scene in the first episode this time, but it's in that original post for posterity.  I'm sure I just missed it, since why would they remove it?  That wouldn't make any sense at all, considering all the other homages (even Sugar and Spike make a cameo appearance in this episode, which is just great as well).  Spoilers below, in case you haven't seen the episode.

WCW: The Last Monday Nitro 3-26-01

I can't believe it's been almost 13 years since the last Monday Nitro aired. Wrestling certainly hasn't been the same since WCW was sold. It's too bad egos and bad corporate decisions got in the way of the company's success, though I wouldn't have wanted the WWwhatever to have disappeared either. Competition is a great thing. I always preferred the NWA/WCW style of wrestling and was saddened to see WCW trying to emulate the WWF at all.

Star Trek into Darkness pt 2

Wow, nothing about this movie is original is it?  And it's too damn long.  I'm only 93 minutes into it and I can already tell what's going to happen.  Even with Spock telling Spock what happened in the original (and better) version of the movie.  I really dislike this version of Kirk, he can't capture the essence of the character.  Quinto is good as Spock, for the most part, I really believe he could almost grow up to be Leonard Nimoy.  Bones is mostly good, but just can't get it right either.  The rest are adequate.  I do like the new Scotty.

Stronger vs Titan

OK, this is such a great series, I have to finish watching it soon. It's great that someone subtitled it. Obviously this scene was influenced by the spaghetti western genre, right down to the music. It's pretty cool to see Stronger riding a horse.

Daigoro vs Goliath

This is one of those movies I really want to like more than I do.  When I originally saw it many years ago after it was "discovered" by fans, it was SOOOO boring.  No subs and not nearly enough monster vs monster action.
