Minya is the son of Godzilla. It's never explained exactly how this happened, or even if they are the same species. They do seem to be, since Minya has the same, if less powerful, atomic breath that Godzilla has as well as the back spines. He's not nearly as angry as Godzilla, nor as brave, but he's just a baby. He does have a pretty intense growth spurt right away, but then it slows down for at least 30 years. He's the same size in 1999 as he was in 1967. He might just be a mini-zilla, as his Japanese name implies.
Minya, or more accurately, Minira, showed up in three whole movies in the first series, and then one final one in the third series. Many of the more serious Godzilla fans don't like the little guy, but I saw Godzilla's Revenge (1969) early on in my fandom career, and always loved him. I was glad to see him in Final Wars (2004) despite that movie's many flaws.
