Gulliver's Gigantic Goof

 

What, did Stan Lee write that alliterative title?  Green Arrow guest starred in that episode from the first season of Super Friends.  A well meaning but misguided scientist,  Dr. Hiram Gulliver, invents a way to shrink all humanity down to two inches tall.  This will solve the population problem.  He is not wrong, but he didn't figure in all the damage it would cause, plus people would turn into food sources for larger animals now.  Or perhaps he did?  Green Arrow is called in to help rescue the main members of the Justice League, and they manage to get Gulliver to see the error of his ways.

Green Arrow and Aquaman

 

Everyone knows the Trinity from DC Comics.  Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman were all published continuously from the start.  However, there are a few other heroes that were in the comics from that time frame as well.  Aquaman and Green Arrow are two of them.  You can also tell because they never got new origins or suits when Earth 1 began.  OK, sure, GA got a bit of an upgrade, especially in personality in the early 70s, but he kept the same look for ages.  Aquaman has gone through some changes, but I don't even know if an Earth 2 twin was ever acknowledged.  I wish I had asked Roy Thomas when I met him several years ago.

That goateed loudmouth...

There's a reason this is here, since it pertains to an upcoming issue of Xenorama featuring my favorite comic book stories.  This was the first comic book or magazine I ever bought that the great Fred Hembeck drew, and it made me a fan.  I laughed then and still laugh now when I read it.  It is truly that funny.  It helps that I was familiar with most of the characters, but having them KNOW they were comic book people is a great touch.  The amazing amount of knowledge Fred has floored me.

Crisis on Earth X

It's a great time to be a superhero fan.  This four part crossover with the CW's super shows was so much fun to watch.  When I saw the promos I knew what was going to happen, what with reading the original JLA/JSA/Freedom Fighters story way back in the early 70s.  Obviously it's not the same, and I'm not even sure how many of the actual heroes (well, one for sure) actually made it from that story to this adaption, but it was just fine.

The (new) Flash

I've seen one or two episodes of this show, but since it's on Netflix I thought I'd watch it some more.  So I'm about three episodes in (I really try not to do this binge watching thing) and so far I have to say I quite enjoy it.  There are so many nods for us long term fans I can forgive Barry for looking like he's about 12 years old.  And I do wish the costume was a little brighter, and the villains had their costumes, but the writing is good and there isn't nearly as much "dark and gritty realism" in the show.

Arrow vs Flash

In part 2, our heroes team up to catch Captain Boomerang.  This time, the Flash crew (secret IDs are known to at least five people in both shows now) travels to Starling City (ugh, what a name) to help Green Arrow capture the aforementioned Captain Boomerang.  Of course, he is on called this once at the end of the show, but we all knew that would happen.  There's also a lot of flashbacks to Ollie's past, why he is so Batman like.  You know, torture to get information from criminals and that sort of nonsense.

"Bold Beginnings"

this really is the best part of the cartoon.  there's just no way anything that follows could be nearly as great.
