Dell's Atlantis, the Lost Continent (1961) comic book

From Wiki- Atlantis, the Lost Continent is a 1961 American science fiction film in Metrocolor produced and directed by George Pal and starring Sal Ponti (under the screen name of Anthony Hall), Joyce Taylor, and John Dall. The film was distributed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.^[2] It was the last film for John Dall.^[3]

The film's storyline concerns the events leading up to the total destruction of the mythical continent of Atlantis during the time of Ancient Greece. Back to me:

Marvel's Man from Atlantis (1978)

I quite enjoyed this series.  I watched the entire run (I think), all four movies and 13 episodes.  I haven't seen them since 1978, though I watched bits and pieces of the show when it aired on Sci-Fi (I am pretty sure) back in the 90s.  They sure were desperate for content back then, weren't they?  A few of the episodes got a bit silly toward the end, but we were still desperate for any genre content in the 70s.  This is probably the show that made me a fan of Victor Buono as well.

From Wiki- Aquaman's first origin story was presented in flashback from his debut in More Fun Comics #73 (November 1941), narrated by the character himself:  The story must start with my father, a famous undersea explorer—if I spoke his name, you would recognize it. My mother died when I was a baby, and he turned to his work of solving the ocean's secrets. His greatest discovery was an ancient city, in the depths where no other diver had ever penetrated. My father believed it was the lost kingdom of Atlantis. He made himself a water-tight home in one of the palaces and lived there, studying the records and devices of the race's marvelous wisdom. From the books and records, he learned ways of teaching me to live under the ocean, drawing oxygen from the water and using all the power of the sea to make me wonderfully strong and swift. By training and a hundred scientific secrets, I became what you see—a human being who lives and thrives under the water.

Green Arrow and Aquaman

 

Everyone knows the Trinity from DC Comics.  Superman, Wonder Woman and Batman were all published continuously from the start.  However, there are a few other heroes that were in the comics from that time frame as well.  Aquaman and Green Arrow are two of them.  You can also tell because they never got new origins or suits when Earth 1 began.  OK, sure, GA got a bit of an upgrade, especially in personality in the early 70s, but he kept the same look for ages.  Aquaman has gone through some changes, but I don't even know if an Earth 2 twin was ever acknowledged.  I wish I had asked Roy Thomas when I met him several years ago.

Super Friends 1973

 

I finally caved and bought this first set of eight episodes from the first season of Super Friends.  I have not seen most of these episodes for probably fifty years or so.  I watched some of the other seasons intermittently, since I felt so betrayed by the portrayal of this Justice League.  I was quite salty about this show for many years.  The show ran for fifteen years on ABC, and changed nearly every season.  It got better in the 80s, but by then, I had jobs and things that took me away from Saturday morning cartoons.  I let my thoughts of this season taint all the rest of them.  Ah, to be young and ever so foolish!

League of Super Pets (2022)

 

Just got back from seeing this SUPER fun movie.  Krypto has an existential crisis about Clark dating Lois and has to come to grips with having no other friends to hang out with.  While doing that, he also has to contend with Lu Lu, a psychotic super powered Guinea pig.  She gets her powers from orange Kryptonite.  It also gives odd powers to a pig, a squirrel, another dog and a turtle.  Lu Lu captures some of the Justice League in order to return to being Lex Luthor's pet.  The now Super Pets have to get it together to rescue the human heroes and stop Lu Lu.  Which means Krypto has to figure out how to make friends and influence people.

hey! two kids with comics!

I am about four years old in this picture, or maybe just turned five.  That is my younger brother looking rather surprised at having his picture taken.  I am pretty sure there is an Aquaman comic book in the picture, and I still have several of those Whitman Big Little Books in my collection.  I think most of the comics have disintegrated by now though.  It sure would be interesting to know what issues they were though.  I am sure every one of them featured superheroes of some sort, though.  Now, the coloring books were probably a good mix of things, but there were probably some superheroes in there as well.

Bronze Age Brave and Bold v 1

 

I received this fun book as a late Xmas present.  It's chock full of stories that don't quite fit into the established DC continuity, but who cares about that?  You get to see Batman team up with a wide variety of heroes, many of which were not in the Justice League.  Which makes them more fun.  The first story is a Metal Men adventure in which Batman mentions a web slinging "Peter come lately".  It's from 1967, which seems a little late to be using that joke.  Batmania is in full swing for the first few stories, though not nearly as bad as it had been in the other books Batman was featured in.

Aqua Cave

It has been quite a while since there were any posts here.  I am writing the Xenorama books these days, which takes up most of my free time.  I loved the blog, but I'd really rather hold physical printed material in my hands when I read.  Call me old fashioned.

I'm currently working on an issue of Xenorama dedicated to some of my favorite comic books.  I have about 10 issues in various states of completion, and this is by no means done.   It's full of mostly Marvel and DC stories from when I was growing up, but there are some other surprises in there.

One of them is Aquaman.  I'm glad that his movie was a little successful, and I quite enjoyed it when I saw it in the theater.  I wrote about him about ten years ago, before the Brave and Bold cartoon made him outrageous and liked him then.

Justice League (2017)

I liked it.  I've been a fan of the Justice League in many of it's incarnations for a long time, and I'm glad they made this movie now, instead of a few years ago when it would have been all grimdark.

Pet sidekicks to superheroes

One of the fun things about comics from the 50s and 60s is that our heroes had pets that occasionally helped them out of various jams whilst fighting crime and villains.  I read more Krypto stories back then, so he's high on my list of favorites.  I saw a few stories about the Legion of Super Pets and I did know who Proty was, but I never read origin stories of Comet, Beppo or Streaky back in the day.  I do think my cat Thuvia is a relative of Streaky, though.

The Ocean Patrol also patrolled the ocean in some of the greatest looking boats ever put on film. They came equipped with torpedoes and various other weapons as needed per episode, such as missiles that knock people out instead of explode, or lasers or sonic guns. Bulton is the skipper of the P-1. The members of the Patrol are also equipped with various personal weapons.

The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure intro

Wow, I have never seen this intro before, nor was aware of it's existence. It's pretty groovy, one can tell it's from the mid to late 60s. It's got all the guest heroes in the song as well, though I wonder if any viewer ever noticed Aquaman wasn't in the JLA cartoon segments, even though he's in the intro.

I don't think this is my original, since it's got a $1.00 sticker on the inside cover.  wish I remembered when I bought it, think it was at a sale at a mall.  I got several that day, I believe.  the cover... well, it's interesting.  Aquaman doesn't look very heroic.

in this one, a mysterious radioactive object drops from the sky into the ocean (presumably near Atlantis).  Aquaman and "his mermaid mate" Mera are called in to investigate.  they soon are captured by a net, but Mera's hard water powers quickly free them.  she makes a giant pair of scissors.  why not a couple of cutlasses, keeping with an underwater theme?

Aquaman: War Of The Water Worlds

I did see a lot of these episodes growing up. Aquaman was just awesome as well. they adapted a lot of his various villains, and even included Mera as well, which is nice. I've talked about this cartoon before, so check the tags if you want to see more. suffice it to say, it's just as fun, silly and full of action as most of Filmation's cartoons of the time.

Super Giant Aquaman

thanks to Mr. Owari, I got this comic book again, after many many years of not having it.  I am not sure why I bought it in the first place, as I don't remember being a huge Aquaman fan, but perhaps it was a gift.  it's only fitting now that I received it as a gift again.

anyway, I literally read the thing to pieces.  lost the covers, then several of the front and back pages.  I think eventually it disintegrated and receded from the pages of my mind.  here and there I would remember bits of the Aquagirl story (the purple eyes are very memorable), but most of the stories I forgot completely, much like the book itself.
