Blithe Spirit (1945)

this movie is based on Noel Coward's play of the same name.  it's veddy veddy British, which means rather witty and yet rather tame.

a man accidentally summons the spirit of his dead wife back, who then tries to kill him.  well, not at first, she tries to get his current wife to leave him, and then it kind of spirals out of control from there, leading to an ending which is rather predictable.

it's a fun movie, but the only really likable character is the medium Madame Arcati, played by Margaret Rutherford, who is wonderful.  she later played an interesting version of Miss Marple.  anyway,  her seance is fun and you almost believe it's real.

the effects are mostly fades and double exposures, with the standard wire effects for the practical stuff.  the ghosts (yes, there are more of them) aren't quite ethereal, but rather green.  gotta love technicolor!  the restoration of this movie looks great, by the way, like it was filmed yesterday.
