The Snow Queen 1957/59

From wiki- The Snow Queen (Russian: Снежная королева, romanizedSnezhnaya Koroleva) is a 1957 Soviet animated musical fantasy film directed by Lev Atamanov.[2] It is the ninth full-length animated production by Soyuzmultfilm and is based on the 1844 fable "The Snow Queen" by Hans Christian Andersen. The film is one of the earliest cinematic adaptations of the Scandinavian Danish fable since its publication in New Fairy Tales. First Volume. Second Collection.  The film was originally released in the Soviet Union on November 1, 1957. The film was re-released with an English soundtrack in 1959, 1993, and 1995. The film was translated into several major languages: English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Finnish and Swedish. In 1959, at the height of the Cold War, Universal Pictures acquired the film for U.S. theatrical distribution (as the first animated film from Universal).

OK, this experiment did not quite work out, but it was an admirable try.  I hope.

Villain of the Week- Dr. Fear

From Comics Vine- Ambrose Meek was a timid shopkeeper who over the years developed a secret contempt for others - especially his clientele. Having enough of the customers he despised he decided he would seek money and power through crime. To do this he developed the masked identity of Doctor Fear. Meek's Doctor Fear mask could somehow frighten a person to the point of death. Given Ambrose Meek's seemingly weak and feeble demeanor, he thought that no one would suspect him of Doctor Fear's crimes, going so far as to return to the scene of his first victim.

As Doctor Fear's exploits grew more bold, so did the behavior of the once meek, Ambrose Meek. This roused the suspicions of criminologist Mark Todd who was working the Doctor Fear case (and was also the secret identity of Blazing Skull.) After a confrontation, Fear believed he slayed Todd, so with his obsstacles removed he decided to make ransom demands live on the radio. Unfortunately for Meek, the Blazing Skull showed up, interrupting his broadcast. The two then did battle atop the radio station ending with Meek being unmasked and surrendering.

Speed Racer takes a lot of chances, and is occasionally a hot head.

Planet Prince, aka Prince of Space

From Wiki- Planet Prince (遊星王子, Yūsei Ōji)

Toei produced two theatrical movies in 1959 that featured the Planet Prince character, but wearing a completely different, more streamlined costume (and goggled helmet) than the one worn in the tv series. The hero in these two movies was played by Tatsuo Umemiya. The movies were released a week apart. The films were titled:

  • Planet Prince (遊星王子, Yūsei Ōji) Released: May 19, 1959
  • Planet Prince - The Terrifying Spaceship (遊星王子 - 恐怖の宇宙船, Yūsei Ōji - Kyōfu no Uchūsen) Released: May 25, 1959

For TV release in America, these two Planet Prince movies were compiled into an 85-minute, English-dubbed movie entitled Prince of Space that was first shown in 1965.[1]  Back to me:

756. 10 "Brothers" of Shaolin (sheh, right!) 1977

Caveman 1981

I have written about this movie a time or two before, but never with an actual review.  Though I did a very early episode about it on my podcast, that was pre-YouTube and me knowing more about such things.

755. Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment in 1981

Here's a movie that should have been way more popular some 45 years ago.  Thankfully, a lot of people have realized that now.

7500 Official Trailer #1 - Horror Movie (2012)

Yep, this does not appeal to me at all.  It sounded interesting, but alas, the trailer makes it look like I would be cheering for the "horror" to win.

754. The Phantom of 1943 episodes 01-04 review!

I enjoy most serials, and I would have loved seeing this one as a kid.  Tis why I love Radar Men from the Moon so much!

Villain of the Week- Ultra-Humanite

From Wiki (art by the late, great George Perez)- The Ultra-Humanite is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. He first appeared as a recurring adversary of Superman, and was the first supervillain faced by him. Though his name is a near-synonym for Superman, he was designed to be the polar opposite of Superman; while Superman is a hero with superhuman strength, the Ultra-Humanite is a criminal mastermind who has a crippled body but a highly advanced intellect.[1] The Ultra-Humanite served as Superman's nemesis until the introduction of Superman's archnemesis, the mad scientist Lex Luthor.[2] The origins of the Ultra-Humanite are shrouded in mystery. Even he claims not to remember his true name or appearance and attributes his vast intellect and mental prowess to scientific experiments of an unknown nature.

The Ultra-Humanite was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.[3] He first appeared in Action Comics #13 (June 1939), which was written by Siegel and drawn by Paul Cassidy (serving as a ghost artist for Shuster).[4]  Back to me:

752. The Three Stooges in Orbit (eventually)! 1962 review

It is a fun movie, but a tidge too repetitive for it's own good.  Just take out a bit of the schtick and it would go a lot faster.

Cribbins - Right Said Fred

Actually heard this on the radio recently- one has to love local, independent radio stations!

751. Speed Racer vs. The Mammoth Car 05-08!

The series gets cooking here, and the tropes we will see all begin.  It is important to remember these cartoons were not meant to be watched more than once a day.

Miracle Films presents Monsters from an Unknown Planet

This reminds me of AIP's Monster from a Prehistoric Planet... neither name is very true.  I think anyone who saw this knew where these monsters were from.

749. The Mortal Combat of Crippled Avengers (1978, review)!

Frikkin new computer- give me my beloved Arial font! Ahem.  What a great movie this is!

748. Phantom of the Paradise Lost! (1974)

I quite enjoyed this movie upon this second viewing.  The plot is something we have all seen, heck, even by 1974 it isn't anything new.

Piss On The Wall- J. Geils Band

This is probably my favorite track from the Freeze Frame LP, way back in late 1981.  I still remember where I bought this album and when.

744. Go, Speed Racer, go! 01-04! Plans and Masks!

Here we start the new cartoon series- Speed Racer!  What a show!  It is probably the only "racing" show I have ever been interested in.

Calvin and Hobbes Monday 02-08-1986

This is the first mention and "appearance" of Captain Napalm.  I think he shows up in comic book form later, but Stupendous Man would be Calvin's alter ego for most of the run.

743. Lots of Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971)

Boy I wanted to like this movie more than I did.  The Wiki synopsis was interesting... and the movie was... but it wasn't great.

The Phantom Planet

From Wiki- The Phantom Planet is a 1961 independently made American black-and-white science fiction film, produced by Fred Gebhardt, directed by William Marshall, that stars Dean Fredericks, Coleen Gray, Anthony Dexter, and Francis X. Bushman.[2] It was the first credited film appearance of Richard Kiel, although he is unrecognizable in a masked monster costume. The film was released on December 13, 1961 in the U.S. by American International Pictures[3] as a double feature with Assignment Outer Space (1960).

The new Shmoo

From Wiki- The New Shmoo is an American animated television series based on the character from the Li'l Abner comic strip created by Al Capp, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions and broadcast on NBC from September 22 to December 15, 1979.[1]

Similar to Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! on CBS and later ABC, the show follows a group of teenagers—Mickey, Nita, and Billy Joe—who solve mysteries and crimes with their friend, Shmoo, a friendly bulbous creature who can stretch and shape his body into any form he wants. The teens worked for Mighty Mysteries Comics.Back to me:
