911. The thrilling Time of Their Lives review!

This is such a fun movie, if a tiny bit padded out here and there.

get ready for The TIme of Their Lives!

Sven is airing this movie tomorrow, and oddly enough, whilst the trailer is on here, I did not review it.

Sven- Abbott and Costello meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1953)

From Wiki- A series of horrific murders has terrorized Victorian London and baffled police. While returning home from a pub, newspaper reporter Bruce Adams finds one murder victim, a prominent doctor. The next day, two American policemen, Slim and Tubby, who are studying London police methods, respond to brawl at a women's suffrage rally in Hyde Park. Reporter Adams, young suffragette Vicky Edwards, Slim, and Tubby are all caught up in the fray and wind up in jail. Vicky's guardian, Dr. Henry Jekyll, bails Vicky and Adams out, while Tubby and Slim are kicked off the police force. Unknown to anyone, Dr. Jekyll has developed a serum which transforms him into Mr. Hyde—the "monster" who is responsible for the recent murders. Dr. Jekyll is secretly in love with Vicky, and is angered by the mutual attraction between Vicky and Bruce. He injects himself to transform once again into Hyde with the intent of murdering Bruce. Me again: Shenanigans ensue!

Sven- Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy (1955)

 

Bud and Lou are stranded in Cairo, Egypt.  Naturally they run afoul of both treasure hunters and followers of the Cult of Klaris.  The treasure hunters want the treasure of Klaris, and of course, the Klaris Cult just wants it to stay put.  The boys want the treasure so they can sell it and go home.  Eventually, Klaris revives, Bud and a henchman dress up as mummies and an explosion ensues.  For once, the mummy really isn't the bad guy.

Sven- Abbott and Costello Meet the Invisible Man (1951)

 

Bud and Lou finally graduate from detective school.  They immediately get involved with a boxer on the run, the rather unlikable Tommy Nelson.  He's been framed, see, and needs the boys to clear his name.  Tommy's fiance, Helen Gray, has an uncle, Dr. Philip Gray, who has rediscovered Jack Griffin's invisibility serum.  Ol' Tommy boy wants to use it, but is denied since it can cause mental instability.  Guess who shoots himself up with it anyway?  This leads to Bud becoming a boxer, and many shenanigans in the ring.  Finally, Tommy gets cleared and turns visible.  Lou becomes invisible for a minute, then reappears with his legs on backwards.  Bud says he always gets things wrong.

Sven- Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein (1948)

 

There really isn't a lot to say about this great movie, so this post will be short.  I've seen the movie so many times that all the characters seem like old friends.  Sven really couldn't tell me much about the movie I didn't already know, but that's on me, not him.  He has aired this before, but I don't mind.  It is better than seeing the Empire of the Ants again, I'll tell you what.  I don't remember how old I was when I first saw the movie, but it was a regular on KWGN Channel 2.  By then I was familiar with Bud and Lou, and had seen many Universal movies.

The fifth (out of six) film in Abbott and Costello meet some kind of monster (I am including Abbott and Costello go to Mars (1953) in here as well) and it is mildly entertaining.  Bud and Lou are Slim and Tubby, police officers on loan to London.  They get in a brawl at a woman's suffrage rally at Hyde Park.  Eventually they get involved with Dr. Jekyll, which inevitably gets them involved with Mr. Hyde.  By the end of the movie, Tubby gets an injection and becomes Hyde, Jr. 

Herbie vol. 1

I have talked about Herbie before with my "Bride of Hembeck" post many years ago, and how that was my introduction to the character.  In the 80s there were a few Herbie comics reprinted and so I got to read the actual stories, and Hembeck totally nailed the character, which made me enjoy both even more.  I don't recall if the stories were presented in chronological order, which I think bugged me at the time, but not enough to stop buying the books.

Here's a fun Abbott and Costello movie from 1946. It's quite a bit different than their usual fare, which I find hit or miss unless it has a monster theme. This doesn't use their usual formula nearly as much.

Kaufman Lawler Feud: Chapter 34 - Andy's Death

This is it, the final chapter of the feud. Andy had passed away and his greatest foe, Jerry Lawler had some words about his death. Only years later did it come to light how much the two enjoyed working with each other. Jerry is really good here though, keeping the business safe.

Abbott & Costello Meet the Creature

here's a clip from the Colgate Comedy Hour. when I was a kid I always wondered why the boys never met the Creature or some of the other sci-fi monsters. they did meet most of Universal's classic monsters. it seemed a natural for me to have them meet up the most famous "new" monster.

this is one of the movies I did see as a kid, and it's more fun to me than some of the other non-genre films the boys did.  I haven't seen it in probably 30 years though.  it holds up pretty well.

Abbott and Costello Meet the Killer (1949)

watched this movie yesterday.  it's hard to believe but I had never seen it before.  granted, it's not really in the "boys meet the monsters" series, but it does have Boris Karloff in it, so you would think I would have been at least interested in viewing it.  it must never have aired in my area, or it was on some time when I wasn't there.  that could have happened, I'll grant.

the best thing that baseball has given to the world, no question. having said that, I do enjoy actually playing baseball. I believe this version is from "The Naughty Nineties". it never fails to make me laugh.

ha, not the bit you expected, was it? can't have too many skits on sports right away now, can we? this is another one of their really funny one. Bud and Lou tended to rely on more verbal humor than slapstick for their best bits.
