Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kids (1973)

From Wiki- Similar to both Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! and Josie and the Pussycats on CBS, the show depicts the adventures of the titular teen pop group.[3] The band consists of 4 heartthrobs: Butch Cassidy (lead vocals and lead guitar); mini-skirted blonde beauty Merilee (tambourine); sensible Stephanie, nicknamed Steffy (bass guitar); and curly-haired Wally (drums). Accompanied by Wally's dog Elvis, these popular rock stars lead double lives as government-backed crime-fighters.[4]  The teens are advised by a supercomputer named Mr. Socrates, who is (somehow) violently allergic to dogs. When the group meets with Mr. Socrates in his lair for their latest assignment, Elvis is always told to stay outside. Yet Elvis always ends up inside the lair, by his own ingenuity and/or by Wally's forgetfulness. Elvis's mere presence causes Mr. Socrates to sneeze and go haywire; Mr. Socrates then sends the group out of the lair, and off to their assignment. Butch, designated as "Sundance 1", wears a special communicator-ring which keeps him in contact with Mr. Socrates.  Back to me:

HOTW- Santa Claus

From Wiki- Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, or Santa) is a legendary figure[1] originating in Western Christian culture who is said to bring gifts during the late evening and overnight hours on Christmas Eve. In the legend, Christmas elves make the toys in Santa's workshop, while flying reindeer pull his sleigh through the air.[2][3] The popular conception of Santa Claus originates from folklore traditions surrounding the 4th-century Christian bishop Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children. Saint Nicholas became renowned for his reported generosity and secret gift-giving. The image of Santa Claus shares similarities with the English figure of Father Christmas, and they are both now popularly regarded as the same person.[4]  Me again:

Sven- Phantom of the Opera (1943)

From Wiki (of course): Violinist Erique Claudin is dismissed from the Paris Opera House after revealing that he is losing the use of the fingers of his left hand. Unbeknownst to the conductor, who assumes Claudin can support himself, the musician has used all his money to help anonymously fund voice lessons for Christine Dubois, a young soprano to whom he is devoted. Meanwhile, Christine is pressured by Inspector Raoul Dubert to quit the Opera and marry him. But famed opera baritone Anatole Garron hopes to win Christine's heart despite this. Christine considers them both good friends but doesn't openly express if she loves them.  In a desperate attempt to earn money, Claudin submits a piano concerto he has written for publication. After weeks of not hearing any response about his concerto, he becomes worried and returns to the publisher, Maurice Pleyel, to ask about it. Pleyel rudely tells him to leave. Claudin hears his concerto being played in the office and is convinced that Pleyel is trying to steal it; unbeknownst to him, a visiting Franz Liszt had been playing and endorsing the concerto. Enraged, Claudin strangles Pleyel. Georgette, the publisher's assistant, throws etching acid in Claudin's face, horribly scarring him forever. Now wanted for murder, Claudin flees into the sewers of the Opera and covers his disfigurement with a prop mask stolen from the Opera house, thus becoming the Phantom. Back to me:

Gamera The Showa Era Blu Ray box set

Just got this from Arrow Video, as an early Yule present.  I am looking forward to watching most of these movies yet again.  I have most of them on DVD, but I couldn't resist the lowered price of this set.  And knowing what quality work Arrow does (I have mentioned that, I bet) it was an easy choice.  It is all eight of the Showa movies, which means six are easy to watch and two are not.  You, my dear reader, can figure out which two movies I am talking about.  I am glad I got to see all of the fun ones growing up, though.  Thanks, Channel 2 KWGN.  A young monster fan appreciates you.  Japanese monsters were on a lot while I was growing up, and that didn't happen in all parts of the country.

Arrow Video Shaws Blu Ray (Chang Cheh edition)

Just received this yesterday.  I have three of the four films on DVD (on a DVDr) and Five Venoms of course on Blu Ray already.  I might have done all the Shaolin movies together, but this is a great set.  I am already watching Shaolin Temple, since that was the one I wanted an upgrade of the most.  That was lousy sentence structure, but you know what I mean.  Suffice it to say, this set is stunning.  It is loaded with extras, I mean, it is from Arrow, so that is to be expected.  It has all the English dubs and some of the English opening credit scenes.  I love their product, I will tell you what.  I couldn't tell you which company is best, Kino-Lorber or Arrow, but damn I am glad to have both of them around.  They have better extras on their discs than most of the big popular movies and companies ever do.  They sure know their audience, I'll tell you what.

HOTW- Obro

From Wiki: The Giant of Metropolis (Italian: Il gigante di Metropolis) is a 1961 color Italian fantasy adventure film that was produced by Decio Salvi and Emimmo Salvi, directed by Umberto Scarpelli, that stars Gordon Mitchell and Bella Cortez. Muscleman Obro travels to the sinful capital of Atlantis to rebuke its godlessness and hubris and becomes involved in the battle against its evil lord Yotar and his hideous super-science schemes, which involve transplanting an old and knowledgeable brain into his son's body.  Back to me:

GoodTimes Home Video was always a good source for a wide variety of movies and shows.  They were also not too expensive, either.

Sven- Dinosaurus!

Two dinosaurs and a caveman are found in suspended animation after an underwater explosion.  Lightning brings them back to life, and terror and hi-jinks follow.  Our heroes are trapped on an island in the Caribbean and have to figure out a way to stop these monsters from... something? Granted, the Tyrannosaurus rex was running around eating people, but after 65 million years of sleep, he had to be hungry.  This movie was made at a time when all theropod dinosaurs would eat people, animals and even machinery, even if they had a mouthful of other dinosaur.  It's just how it was.  Manly hero Bart has to save the island from both the T rex and much slimier island boss Mike Hacker.

HOTW- Kalimán

From Wiki- Kalimán or Kalimán, the Incredible Man is a popular Mexican adventurer superhero, created by Rafael Cutberto Navarro and Modesto Vázquez González in 1963. He is the main character of the radio drama bearing his name, which depicts the adventures of Kalimán, a descendant of the Egyptian Pharaohs, and his young companion, Solín. Kalimán is very well known and popular across Spanish America, and the radio series spawned a comic book series and two film adaptations. The adventures of Kalimán were published as a serialized weekly comic, and printed for twenty-six consecutive years, with the series reaching its highest popularity in 1965; it is still quite popular today in reprints and in paperback format. Kalimán himself is considered as a Mexican pop culture icon and one of the first and most representative examples of Mexican superheroes. Me again:

The Lone Ranger (1956)

The Lone Ranger was a huge hit in the early days of television.  The show ran for several years, and survived a major cast change for one season.  After the series ended, Warner Brothers made two movies.  This is the first one, though I kinda wish it had been called The Lone Ranger at Spirit Mountain or something like that.  As long as it had his name in the title, it would have gone over big time.  Which it must have, since a sequel was made two years later.

Loonatics Unleashed (2005)

"In the year 2772, a meteor strikes the city-planet of Acmetropolis, knocking it off its axis. This cosmic event releases supernatural forces unleashing a new kind of hero...The Loonatics!"

- Zadavia's opening monologue from season 1.

From Wiki- Loonatics Unleashed is an American superhero animated television series produced by Warner Bros. Animation that ran on Kids' WB for two seasons from 2005[1] to 2007. It also aired on Cartoon Network internationally (excluding Japan). The series was based/inspired on the Looney Tunes cartoon characters, with the series described by Warner Bros. as an action comedy. Loonatics Unleashed is meant to be a mixture of the Looney Tunes shorts' irreverent style of humor and a modern action animated series, with the characters designed in a more action cartoon-inspired style.

345. The War of Sanda and Gaira, the Gargantuas!

Here's a quick recap of the wonderful War of the Gargantuas!

HOTW- Lightning (Thunder Agent)

From good ol' Wiki- Lightning – Virgil "Guy" Gilbert wears the Lightning Suit, which gives him super-speed but also ages him at an accelerated rate.  Back to me- that is all they have.  I believe I read that Guy was "cured" in the original run by using the Dynamo belt on him to slow the aging, or something like that.  I have not read ALL of the Agents original adventures, and that is one of them.  I was captivated by these heroes, since I had never read any of the stories, or perhaps one or two.  You know me, I am the sucker for superhero teams with really cool costumes.  I liked that these were agents, and that they could be replaced, since the powers were the costumes. The Agents all had great costumes, even the UNDERSEA Agent.

Blu Ray Batman: The Animated Series

I got the Blu Ray set of Batman: The Animated Series quite a while ago,   I have not started watching it, though, because once you start, you kinda gotta go through Superman, the Justice League series, and Batman Beyond.  That is quite a set of shows to get through.  I decided to at least watch the first disc, and damn does this show look great.  I didn't think it could look better, but danged if it doesn't.  Bruce Timm introduces several of these early episodes, which is fun. The set was released in 2018, so I have had it for a bit.  I had forgotten how good the show was, I mean, really good it is. There are the first two movies in here as well, plus all the extras from the DVD sets and even more!  I have double-dipped on a few things, but this is really one that is worth it.

338. Super DC Giant S 26, featuring Aquaman!

One of my first Aquaman comics was a good introduction to the character!

HOTW- The Comet

From Wiki- The Comet (John Dickering) is a character that first appeared in Pep Comics #1 in January 1940. A little over a year later, the Comet was the first superhero to be killed in the line of duty.[1] He died in issue #17 (July 1941), which also introduced his brother, a brutal hero called the Hangman. In Pep #1, in a story drawn by Jack Cole, young scientist John Dickering has discovered a gas fifty times lighter than hydrogen.[3] By injecting small doses of the gas into his bloodstream, he is able to make great leaps through the air. After a number of injections, twin beams come from Dickering's eyes and when he crosses the beams, whatever he is looking at disintegrates. He makes a glass shield (visor) as that is the only thing his beams will not disintegrate, a weakness often used against him from the first story onwards.

Sven- Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia- Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein[a] is a 1948 American horror comedy film directed by Charles Barton. The film features Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), who has partnered with Dr. Sandra Mornay (Lenore Aubert) in order to find a brain to reactivate Frankenstein's monster (Glenn Strange), and they find Wilbur Grey (Lou Costello), the ideal candidate. Larry Talbot makes an urgent phone call to a railway station in Florida, where Chick Young and Wilbur Grey work as baggage clerks. Talbot tries to warn Wilbur of a shipment due to arrive for "McDougal's House of Horrors". However, before he finishes, the moon rises and Talbot transforms into a werewolf, causing Wilbur to think the call is a prank. Meanwhile, McDougal demands the crates be personally delivered to his wax museum. back to me:

The Nine Demons (1984)

Joey and Gary are best friends and highly trained kung fu masters.  The servants of their house betray them, wiping almost everyone out.  Joey gets away, meets the 9th King of Hell, and sells his soul to help his best pal.  He is given nine demons to command.  Nothing about this can go wrong, can it? There is a lot of weird effects, odd camera work and great fights, if sped up a bit, but it is hard to follow.

331. Bringing Dinosaurs to Life in the Land of the Lost!

I got this on Sunday and it is great!

HOTW- Dracula

From Wiki- Dracula is a modern-day direct descendant of the original Count Dracula now working as a medical researcher in the old family castle in Transylvania. Due to his experiments to develop a cure for brain damage using a serum developed from bat blood, he accidentally gains strange "vampire"-like powers, including the ability to turn into a bat and superhuman sight and hearing. He decides to embark on a superhero career in order to redeem his family name, developing his body through diet and exercise to the peak of physical perfection and designing himself his own distinctive crimson-cowled purple costume with a bat-shaped gold belt buckle, after which he vows to fight evil and superstition in all its forms. Varan Lobby card

Lobby cards sure are cool, even if the movie isn't that great.  I love Varan, but I am not blind to its various faults.  But I had the 8mm version when I was a small agent, and we watched it a lot, though there were odd things about the digest that made no sense.  I think for 8-10 minutes, there should have been a lot more monster action.  This may be the subject of a podcast- the movie and the monster, that is.  Be that as it may, the movie itself is now an old friend, good or not,  I think we all have movies like this in our history, right?  Unless you don't like movies, and if not, why are you reading this blog?

From Wiki- Green Lantern: The Animated Series is an American animated superhero television series based on the DC Comics superhero Green Lantern. The series aired on Cartoon Network, as part of their "DC Nation" television block. A one-hour[1] sneak peek aired on November 11, 2011,[2][3] it ran from March 17, 2012, until March 16, 2013.[4][5] A special screening of the first episode was shown at New York Comic Con 2011 on October 15.[6] This was the first Green Lantern television series and the first CGI DC/WB series. The series was cancelled after one season due to poor toy sales after the negative reception and poor box office performance of the live-action film.[7]  Me again:

324. Two Martial Arts book reviews!

HOTW- Red Raven

From Marvel Fandom- The small child who was to become the Red Raven was riding with his parents aboard one of the first airplanes to cross the Atlantic Ocean when the plane entered a dense fog bank and struck the island of the Bird People which was concealed within. The Bird People were originally Inhumans who had seceded from their race's city of Attilan. The Bird People instead lived in a city built atop an "island," which, due to powerful anti-gravity drives, floated high above the Earth's surface. Whereas most Inhumans have different powers than the others, all of the Bird People resembled ordinary humans, except for their large, feathered wings, which made them capable of flight. The child who was to become the Red Raven was the only human to survive the plane crash, and the Bird People, who are also known as the Winged Ones, decided to raise him as one of their own.[2]

The Bird People named the child Red Raven because of his flaming red hair, and, as he grew older, gave him a costume that would enable him to fly. The costume contained miniature anti-gravity mechanisms and included large artificial wings which would help him steer himself and negotiate air currents while in flight.  Me again:

King Shisa and Godzilla by Yasushi Torisawa

Here is an action shot by a wonderful artist.  I have talked about him almost 14 years ago,  The first was a picture of King Shisa just waking up, and this one is a bit more dramatic.  I do still want a tattoo of King Shisa, but that will have to wait for a while.  This looks great, I gotta say.  I would love an English language book about Yasushi Torisawa, that would be pretty amazing.  There are probably licensing issues at play for that, but it would make even us lesser G-nerds shell out $50 or so for it.

319. Ultraman vs Red King and Gabora!

Xenorama #71- The Heculoids!

The 71st issue of Xenorama has been published, and it is all about the Herculoids!  Yes, we did an issue in black and white featuring the cartoon, but this time, we included the Space Stars episodes, toys, and comic book appearances of the series.  Did I mention it was all in full color?  Well, it is, and it looks smashing, I must say!  I would like to do more of the Hanna-Barbera Super TV Heroes like this, but really, only Space Ghost and the Herculoids have made enough impact.  Well, we do have a Jonny Quest issue that will be out next year, so there is that.  Yes, I am quite aware of the "comedy" shows that have been done, but someone else can write about them, should they like.  I would not like.  Be that as it may, normally I would have a trailer here for Sven's movie, but the next two weeks are the Dr. Phibes movies, and we have reviewed them and seen the trailers already, so I will figure out what to talk about instead of them.

Revisiting Jurassic Park (1993)

When this blog first started, it was for a completely different idea than what it has become.  It was to promote my Marine Boy book (in it's third edition now!) but gradually morphed into the beast we all know and love.  It was started in 2007, some 14 years after the first three JP movies had been released.  So they have never been reviewed here properly.  They have been mentioned, and I have watched them several more times, but this is the first time we will talk about that very first movie.

She is the original Wonder Girl and later temporarily adopts another identity, Troia. Created by Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani, she first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #60 (July 1965). Donna has been commonly featured in stories involving the Teen Titans, which she originally joined during their second adventure and is since depicted as a founding member of the team. Back to me:

Sven- The Mummy

From Wiki-  The Mummy is a 1932 American pre-Code supernatural horror film directed by Karl Freund. The screenplay by John L. Balderston was adapted from a treatment written by Nina Wilcox Putnam and Richard Schayer. Released by Universal Studios as a part of the Universal Monsters franchise, the film stars Boris Karloff, Zita Johann, David Manners, Edward Van Sloan and Arthur Byron.

In the film, Karloff stars as Imhotep, an ancient Egyptian mummy who was killed for attempting to resurrect his dead lover, Anck-es-en-Amon. After being discovered and accidentally brought to life by a team of archaeologists, he disguises himself as a modern Egyptian named Ardath Bey and searches for Anck-es-en-Amon, whom he believes has been reincarnated in the modern world. pity poor Godzilla 1978

I was rather excited when I saw the ads for The Godzilla Power Hour in the comic books.  It looked pretty good.  There were some interviews published right before the show debuted in Starlog or some genre zine, which made it sound decent.  By then I knew that there would not be a lot of great monster action, so I did not expect that.  Jana of the Jungle looked good, and at age 13, I appreciated it on a whole 'nother level.  The first episode I remember seeing was The Earth Eater, which is technically the second episode.  I am not sure if I missed the first one (seems odd, dontcha think?) or if the local network started differently.  I don't ever remember seeing the first episode at all, though.  There is a reason for that as well, because of course there is.  And I will elaborate more about that reason after the cut, so click on "there's more" please!

Happy Halloween!  Since we talk about monsters year 'round, we thought a picture of the only creature a Tyrannosaurus rex fears would be appropriate.  Here is Emerald Sage letting Rex know who the boss is around these parts.  She was actually giving him a chomp on the head with her leg in the air like she just don't care, but the obstinate tortie in her decided to ruin that shot.  So we get this one, which is still pretty darn cute.  Of course, every shot of her is pretty darn cute, I must say.

HOTW- Raven

From here- origin: When T.H.U.N.D.E.R. developed a flight suit, they wanted someone to wear it who would not suffer any form of vertigo.  Under his professional name of the Raven, Lawson had been an acrobat, sky-diver and gymnast; moreover, he has unusually acute sight and hearing.  Thus, he was tagged for the job.  At first, Lawson intended to steal the suit and sell it to the highest bidder.  However, when Lightning saves his life on an outing, he has a change of heart and decides to work with the agents.  Raven's costume changed virtually with every issue.  Equipped with glider wings, rocket jets, golden bird claws and metal wings to form a bullet-proof pod, to be used as a battering ram or to create an airtight "cone".  Over time, Raven was given "claws," a laser unit on the back of each glove, the rays of which were capable of slicing through metal or stunning adversaries.  Back to me:

Sven- Invaders from Mars 1953

From Wiki- Invaders from Mars[2] is a 1953 American independent science fiction film directed by William Cameron Menzies and starring Jimmy Hunt, Helena Carter, Arthur Franz, Morris Ankrum, Leif Erickson, and Hillary Brooke. It was produced by Edward L. Alperson Jr. and released by 20th Century-Fox in SuperCinecolor.[3] The film follows David MacLean, a young boy who witnesses a flying saucer behind his home one night. When his father investigates, he returns a changed man; soon David's mother, his neighbors, and others begin to act in the same way. David's panicked story is heard by Dr. Pat Blake, who takes him to astronomer Dr. Stuart Kelston. David convinces Kelston that this is an invading vanguard from Mars.  Invaders from Mars recounts its story from the point of view of an older child in an adult world heading into crisis.[4] It was developed from a scenario by Richard Blake and based on a story treatment by John Tucker Battle, who was inspired by a dream recounted to him by his wife.[5] The film was rushed into production to be released before George Pal's War of the Worlds (also released in 1953), becoming the first feature film to show aliens and their spacecraft in color.[6]  Me again:
