927. The clear Captain America of 1979 review!

This is a decent movie, cursed with having to be an origin story.  It could have been better.

From Wiki- Captain America is a 1990 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics superhero of the same name. It is directed by Albert Pyun and written by Stephen Tolkin, from a story by Tolkin and Larry Block. It stars Matt Salinger in the title role and Scott Paulin as his nemesis the Red Skull, with Ronny Cox, Ned Beatty, Darren McGavin, Francesca Neri, Michael Nouri and Melinda Dillon. The film was produced by Menahem Golan for the now-defunct 21st Century Film Corporation.

While the film takes several liberties with the comic's storyline, it features Steve Rogers becoming Captain America during World War II to battle the Red Skull, being frozen in ice, and subsequently being revived to save the President of the United States from a crime family that dislikes his environmentalist policies.^[7]  While the film received a theatrical release internationally, it was released direct-to-video by Columbia TriStar Home Video in the United States. It received generally unfavorable reviews from critics, though it has since developed a cult following.^[8] now back to me:

                The end is nigh!  At least for this series!  It is pretty enjoyable, but kind of odd as well.

                 Cap fights Amazo, I mean, the Super-Adaptoid!  It is a pretty straightforward adaptation of the Tales of Suspense series, minus some thoughtful commentary on humanity.

            In which we see a first- an actual Avengers cartoon- sorta!  It works out pretty well, despite the rather limited animation.

             In which we get to see the first animated Avengers!  This is how they found Cap and he joined their hallowed ranks.

HOTW- Golden Girl

From Wiki- Betsy Ross is a character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, the character first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941).^[1] Betsy Ross is Captain America's early love interest and supporting character in American comic books published by Marvel Comics during the 1930-1940s period known to historians and collectors as the Golden Age of Comic Books. She then debuted as the superheroine Golden Girl in Captain America Comics #66 (April 1948).  Immediately before and during most of World War II, Elizabeth (then known as Betty) Ross was a member of the U.S. Army's Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, and had previously worked as a waitress and later an FBI agent. She became a friend and eventual girlfriend of Army Private Steve Rogers, unaware of his dual identity as Captain America, whom she admired and who had saved her on more than one occasion. She was kind and resourceful, but not especially strong at first. Betsy investigated fortune tellers Sando and Omar and exposed them as spies. In issue #6 (Sept. 1941), she was captured by the Imperial Japanese spy known as Fang along with Bucky, but was rescued by Captain America. After the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' official entry into the war, she soon became involved in more missions that had her opposing Nazi and Imperial Japanese forces. Over the course of the comics, Ross grows into a tough and capable ally of Captain America and Bucky.  Back to me:

Captain America 1944 serial

 

From Wiki- The serial sees Captain America, really District Attorney Grant Gardner, trying to thwart the plans of the Scarab, really museum curator Dr. Cyrus Maldor—especially regarding his attempts to acquire the "Dynamic Vibrator" and "Electronic Firebolt", devices that could be used as super-weapons.^[2]  In a rare plot element for Republic, the secret identity of the villain is known to the audience from the beginning, if not to the characters in the serial. The studio's usual approach was the use of a mystery villain who was unmasked as one of the other supporting characters only in the final chapter. Back to me:

Captain America II: Death Too Soon (1979)

 From Wiki- Steve Rogers (Reb Brown) is first shown sketching a portrait of a Mrs. Shaw (Susan French), who complains to him about a gang of muggers who have been stealing the proceeds from cashed Social Security checks; she denies having cashed hers. He bids her to do this in order to set a trap for the muggers and springs the trap as Captain America.  In the meantime, a free-lance revolutionary terrorist calling himself General Miguel (Christopher Lee), planning to fight an unspecified war, kidnaps a Professor Ian Ilson (Christopher Cary) and forces him to resume his research in manipulative gerontology. Ilson has managed to formulate both a chemical that accelerates aging and the antidote to the same chemical, and Miguel, posing as the warden of a prison in Oregon near Portland, plans to use the chemicals in question to hold Portland hostage for a multimillion-dollar ransom.  Back to me-

HOTW- Captain America

 

Steven Rogers, 4F from the US Army, volunteers to be a test subject for a mysterious experiment.  He is given potions, rays and injections and attains perfect condition almost immediately.  He is given all kinds of training, and then assigned to the Army Corp as a bumbling private.  For some reason he has to have a secret ID, but camp mascot Bucky Barnes almost immediately finds out Steve and Cap are the same person.  Cap trains Bucky as his sidekick, but neglects to give him a different name.  Good thing Cap had enhanced security clearance, or something.  The pair then battles nazis and the like, until...

Epic Collection- Avengers: Kang War

 

I began reading the Avengers comic book series in earnest at issue #101.  Then kind of stopped after #109, with sporadic issues after that, until about #141.  Somehow I missed the whole origin of the Vision and all the giant size annuals or whatever until #7.  This still astounds me, though my guess is that I had recently discovered GIANT MONSTERS and had to choose between an issue of Famous Monsters or various comic books.  Godzilla often won that battle, at least for a time.  I did not pay enough attention to what was going on in the book, since as regular readers know, I love the Vision.  ALL of these issues had something to do with the Vision and Wanda.

Batman and Captain America (1996)

 

There is a plot afoot in Gotham City in early 1945.  Batman and Robin are on the trail of the Joker and after he escapes, Batman finds some disturbing clues about what the Clown Prince of Crime's plan is.  Cap helps Rock and Easy Company dispose of a War Wheel (I think that is what is is) and gets summoned back to the States.  He and Bucky run into Batman and Robin during a rescue of Robert Oppenheimer.  The big brass suspect a spy on the Manhattan Project.  They think they spy is Bruce Wayne, and Private Rogers is set to watching him.  Steve and Bruce have a quick tussle, and Bruce figures out who he is fighting.  They join forces to stop the Joker, and find out the Red Skull is behind it all.  Big surprise there, right? 

the Marvel Superheroes have Arrived!

I never saw these as a kid, and didn't know any of the production history about them.  I saw them advertised in Famous Monsters and finally purchased one when they showed up at the local K-Mart.  I twas not ready for just how limited the animation was.  I had expected it to be like the Spider-Man cartoon or Hanna-Barbera.  It was disappointing to the younger me to say the least.  I never got any more of them on 8mm because of that, and kind of looked down on them for a long time.  Dang, that pickle was not pleasant, I'll tell you what.

Spider-Man (1981)

Never saw this as it was never syndicated in my area.  I think I would have liked it just fine, especially when the guest heroes would show up.  The main issue with the show is that the writers have Spidey spouting "funny" quips all the time.  ALL. THE. TIME.  It's overkill.  They do tone it down a bit, but there is no real drama here in Peter's life, aside from trying to date Betty Brant.  The villains are mostly from Spidey's rogue's gallery, though Dr. Doom shows up in six of the 26 episodes.  That is an odd choice since Doomsy isn't a Spidey villain the any sense of the word.
