                  Here's a look at a classic, but almost great, giant monster movie, Gorgo!  Sure and it could have been a bit better.

Gorgo and Reptilicus

 

Thanks to John Lemay's great zine Movie Milestones #4. I found out that Reptilicus/Reptisaurus made a "blink and you will miss it" cameo in Gorgo #12 "Monsters Rendezvous".  Poor Repti only get s  named in the last panel, despite helping Gorgo and Ogra save the planet from invading Venusians.  It's too bad they didn't have an actual team up, or do a longer story.  Gorgo and Konga both had pretty respectable runs in the comics.  Had Chartlon been more aware, they could have had some more continuing characters in all of their monster books, which would have been more fun for the reader.

Movie Milestones #4

That darn John LeMay has done it again!  He's been publishing his own fanzine for a while now, and somehow I just noticed it.  Serves me write for not paying attention.  This is a companion zine to his Lost Films Fanzine. I'll be ordering those soon enough as well.  Anyway, this one is all about Gorgo, Reptilicus and... Konga.  As anyone who knows me knows I love Reptilicus, both the movie and the monster.  I also enjoy Gorgo quite a bit.  Konga... well, I have seen it once.  This issue talks about all the origins of the movies, and all the other stuff you would ever want to know about them.  It's really well laid out and looks great.  He publishes both color and black and white versions for both zines.

Reptisaurus The Terrible

 

Who would have thought Reptilicus would inspire 9 issues of a continuing comic book?  Not me, that's for sure.  Had I known this series existed when I was younger I would have been searching them out, because, well, giant monsters.  This collection is self published, since these comic books are apparently in the public domain now.  The reprints look like exactly what they are, comic books scanned into a computer and used that way.  While I don't mind that the advertisements have been removed, a few of the pages would have been fun to read.  They do leave all the other stories in there, which are sort of surreal, but fun to read.

Gorgo, the comic

Actually, just the Ditko Gorgo comics are presented here, but it's a great collection of some of his more unknown work.  While the completist nerd in me would love all of the stories (how many more could there be, though, really) in the series, this is a pretty good representation of them.  Heck, I'd also love the Reptilicus/Reptisaurus stories as well, but that's something for another day, I reckon.

Gorgo trailer

I like this movie, but I can't say I am a huge fan of it. I think if I had seen it at a younger age I would love it now. I always wanted to, but alas, it never aired in my area growing up.

Gorgo appears

this is baby Gorgo as he appears from the Irish Sea and battles some of the fishermen. it's a good scene, full of suspense- what would be the worst thing to see coming out of the water on a foggy night? yep, a real live sea monster. this is the first Western monster movie where the creature gets to survive at the end of the movie, returning with it's small offspring to live peacefully under the sea. of course, the comic books that continued the story had the family get in all sorts of adventures, but sadly the movie isn't as exciting as that.
