Sven- The Monollith Monsters (1957)

A familiar looking meteorite brings some odd rocks to planet Earth.  It lands in the desert, scattering these black fragments all about.  When a windstorm blows over a water tower, odd things begin to happen.  Anything containing silicon and water that touches the rocks begins to petrify.  The heroes of the movie try to figure out how to stop the petrification process.  Much like the Martians in War of the Worlds, the rocks can be stopped with salt water.  However, the rocks are growing to towering size, falling over and then growing again.  The shards are on the path towards town.  Now that they know how to stop the meteoric menace, can they figure out how to deliver that much salt water in the middle of the desert?

I saw this several times growing up, and always enjoyed it.  Looking at it with more grown up eyes (slightly) I enjoy the special effects.  Rock monsters are rather unusual in cinema, so these are quite unique.  Seems to me though, if the rocks were headed west, they would eventually run into the ocean, and then they would be stopped.  Lots of damage though, but perhaps salt water could be dumped on them by the air force.  It's a fun little movie.

Next: Frankenstein 1970
