RIP John Romita, Sr

John Romita, Sr. passed away June 12th.  He was 93 years old.  He was the second Spider-Man artist, taking over for Steve Ditko.  Those were some mighty big shoes to fill, and Romita did an admirable job.  He did tend to make his characters a bit more glamorous than Ditko ever could, but that was good, since had he tried to copy Steve's unique stile no one would have given him a chance.  Romita was a great artist, and worked on all of Marvel's major characters and books.  I had the pleasure of meeting him at a San Diego Comic Con in the 90s, and attended a few panels he was on.  He also did the model sheets for many of the Marvel cartoons in the 60s.

And boy, could he draw women.  He introduced us to Mary Jane Watson, at least visually.  She had been a running gag in the book, but we never saw her face.  Jazzy John sure did not let us down.  I also really liked his version of Medusa.  Both redheads, go figure.

Thank you John, and rest in peace.
