This is the start of Calvin's eating tons of gross cereal to get a premium.  I went through this many, many times, and generally the toys were acceptable.  I think many kids did this in the 70s, or ordered something that looked cool from a magazine.  It was always hit and miss, though.  Many times the items were rather disappointing.

The one time I was elated I was about Calvin's age.  We ate tons of Wheat and Rice Honey cereal (ugh, it was the worst) to get the dinosaur inside the box , and to get enough box tops to send away for the playset- well, two of them.  It took forever to be delivered, but man, it lived up to my expectations.  That was one set of toys that got played with.
