Hero of the Week- Platinum

From DC Fandom.com- Platinum is a liquid metal robot made of platinum with almost limitless shape shifting abilities. She was designed by Dr. William Magnus a brilliant robotic expert along with along with five other robots: Gold, Mercury, Iron, Tin, and Lead. These robots were known as the Metal Men.  Platinum was often referred to as "Tina" and was infatuated with Dr. Magnus, who never reciprocated her affections. Dr. Magnus tells her she has a faulty Responsometer which he believes makes her act like a real human woman. Her personality is very fiery and tempestuous and she gets very jealous whenever Doc has a date and will happily try to split them up and get his attention back to her. She has a personality clash with Mercury, the other hot head of the Metal Men. Back to me:

710. The Saga of Viking Women and a Sea Serpent! 1958

This is a movie I think I would have enjoyed back in the pre-video days.  It is a fun adventure movie, and has a sea serpent in it!

Unit 3 & Venus Pajama Party

Yet another song I have never heard before.  Lots of B-52's vibes, but also different enough.

709. Series Finale: The Savage Dragon 25-26!

I like the series, but probably won't watch it again, since once is enough.  Could have been better, sure.

Calvin and Hobbes Monday - 02-03-1986

I'm with Calvin, and bushels, pecks, etc, just are confusing.  Weights and measures should be uniform.

708. Takin' a Dive with The Warlords of Atlantis! (1978 review)

This movie works really well overall.  It is very pulpy, yet very original, at least as far as movies go.

707. Hercules, Samson And Ulysses! The most peplumy Peplum EVER!

I really enjoyed watching this movie for the review.  It is just so much fun!  More peplum should have been like this one.

Never saw this growing up, unlike Teenage Caveman, but I bet I would have really liked it around age 12-13.

Hero of the Week: Steve Austin, the original

From Wiki- When NASA astronaut USAF Colonel Steve Austin is severely injured in the crash of an experimental lifting body aircraft, he is "rebuilt" in an operation that costs $6 million (equivalent to $41.6 million in 2024).[3] His right arm, both legs and left eye are replaced with "bionic" implants that enhance his strength, speed and vision far above human norms: he can run at speeds of over 60 mph (97 km/h), and his eye has a 20:1 zoom lens and infrared capabilities, while his bionic limbs all have the equivalent power of a bulldozer. He uses his enhanced abilities to work for the OSI (Office of Scientific Intelligence) as a secret agent.  And now returning to me!

703. Earth fights the Flying Saucers in 1956!

This is my least favorite black and white Harryhausen movie, but I did quite enjoy this viewing of it.  Go figure!

Loverboy - Lovin' Every Minute of It (Official Video)

The intro and outro of this video make the song so much more fun. I appreciate Loverboy far more now, though.

702. Savage Dragon 22 24, or does Barbaric find happiness?

One of these episodes is almost really great.  It has some questions that could have lasted an entire 13 episode season, had it been possible.

Tigra vs. Hellcat?

This does not seem probable,  Why would Tigra react this way at all?  She gave up being The Cat, and there should be some camaraderie, right?

700. Hercules Conquers Atlantis for Captive Women! 1961

This is a fun movie, and it runs the exact right amount of time.

This is... Superman?

On ABC TV in 1975 it sure was.  David Wilson made a decent enough Superman, but his Clark Kent was... an interesting choice.

697. The only music zine that matters, CREEM! Sept 1981!

This issue was so influential on me.  I didn't even know it at the time, but it sure made me think about rock and roll.

HOTW- The Diehard

From Comics Vine-  Chosen in the 1940s to become the first of the government's genetic experiments, the super-soldier known as Diehard is one of Youngblood's most mysterious members.

Though he has served in nearly every incarnation of the team, none of his teammates know his true identity. Commonly believed to be the first successful fusion of man and machine, Diehard is characterized by those who know him as a man struggling to understand his own identity. With such a long history of membership in the Youngblood program, Diehard is understandably wary of the arrival of new Diehard units, updated models for which he was the template. Regarded more as a combat unit than a man, Diehard is also constantly wary of his selection for assignments regarded to be "suicide missions." Back to me:

696. It is only Teenage Caveman! 1958

Sure, it is a low-budget movie, but seeing it between the ages of 9-11, it is pretty thought provoking!

Hero of the Week- Robotman

From Wiki- Robotman (Robert Crane) is a Golden Age DC Comics superhero. He first appeared in Star Spangled Comics #7 (April 1942) and was created by Jerry Siegel and Leo Nowak.[100] As his name suggests, Robotman is a cyborg; part robot and part human.

Robert Crane is a scientist whose brain is placed inside a robotic body after he is fatally shot by a criminal named Mason. He assumes the civilian identity of Paul Dennis and joins the All-Star Squadron, accompanied by the robotic dog Robbie.[101][102][103][104][105] His stories are mostly lighthearted in nature, featuring whimsical situations and comic relief (usually provided by Robbie). Despite this, the story remains grounded in Robotman's struggle to adjust to his new existence. At one point, he reveals his identity in court and is declared legally human.[106]  Robotman was revealed to have been one of several other heroes involved in the first meeting of the charter members of the Justice League of America prior to the official forming of the team, an event which was suppressed from the public record.[107]  Back to me:

Hero of the Week- Machine Man

From Wiki- Machine Man (also known as Aaron Stack, Mister Machine and serial number Z2P45-9-X-51 or X-51 for short) is an android superhero appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was created by Jack Kirby for 2001: A Space Odyssey #8 (July 1977), a comic written and drawn by Kirby featuring concepts based on the eponymous 1968 Stanley Kubrick feature film and Arthur C. Clarke's 1968 novel.[2] Shortly thereafter, Machine Man spun off into his own Kirby-created series. He is a robot, the only survivor of a series, raised as a human son of scientist Abel Stack, who was killed removing his auto-destruct mechanism, and further evolved to sentience by a Monolith.  Machine Man, whose real name is Z2P45-9-X-51, is the last of a series of sentient robots created at the Broadhurst Center for the Advancement of Mechanized Research in Central City, California, by robotics expert Abel Stack for the US Army. The previous 50 experimental robots went mad as they achieved sentience and became psychotic due to a lack of identity. X-51 was the only survivor, as he was treated as a son by Stack and given a human face mask as well as being exposed to a monolith. After Stack died trying to protect him, X-51 assumed the human name Aaron Stack and escaped confinement, only to be relentlessly pursued by the army. While on the run, the newly christened Machine Man initiated contact with humanity in order to better understand it.[5]  Back to me:

Rest in Purrs, Emerald Sage

I said goodbye to my Emerald Sage on Tuesday.  She was the Queen of Finding Comfortable Spaces, and squawking at us.  That was her way of telling me to go to bed, or give her some wet food.  Her beautiful green eyes gave her the name Emerald, and Sage was her pound name.  She wasn't quite ten years old, but the kidney failure didn't care at all.  She was the sweetest cat I have had in my life and I will miss her every day.  Just like Dacya and TJ.  We never get them as long as we want, but they give us so much in return.  I wouldn't trade her for anything.

676. Jinzo Ningen Kikaida merch review!

I hope this doesn't come across as bragging- it certainly wasn't meant that way.

Hero of the Week- Black Condor (Quality)

From Wiki-  A Golden Age superhero who possesses the power of flight, the Black Condor was created by writer Will Eisner under the pseudonym Kenneth Lewis, and artist Lou Fine in Crack Comics #1 (cover-dated May 1940).[3] Initially alternating with the Clock as the cover-featured character, he became the solo cover feature from issues #20-26 (Jan.-Nov. 1942). Fine drew the first 24 stories,[4] and his feature continued to run through issue #31.[5]

As an infant traveling with his parents on an archaeological expedition thorough Outer Mongolia, Richard Grey Jr. survives after his family is killed by the bandit Gali Kan and his men. Rescued by a condor who raises him as her own, he learns to fly,[6] as the origin story states, by "studying the movement of wings, the body motions, air currents, balance and levitation" of his avian siblings. A mountain hermit, Father Pierre, eventually discovers and civilizes the feral child, and teaches him to speak English.[7] Richard tracks down and kills the Mongolian bandits who killed his parents and then departs for the United States where he uncovers a plot to kill United States Senator Thomas Wright. He is too late to save Wright from assassination, and so begins to use his identity.[8] He adopts the guise of Black Condor to fight crooked politicians, rum-running bootleggers, and racketeers.[9]  And now returning to me:

Space Master X-7 (1958)

From Wiki- Space Master X-7 is a 1958 American horror science fiction film in Regalscope from Regal Films, produced by Bernard Glasser, directed by Edward Bernds, that stars Bill Williams, Lyn Thomas, and Robert Ellis. Paul Frees, Judd Holdren, and Moe Howard have supporting roles.[2] The screenplay was written by George Worthing Yates and Daniel Mainwaring. A space probe returns to Earth, and samples from it are taken away to be investigated by scientist Dr Charles Pommer, working from his home laboratory. He quickly discovers that the mysterious microbes brought back from space, once dormant, grow quickly when fed protein, and he theorizes that Mars was possibly turned into a wasteland by this aggressive fungus. Spores from the fungus, which he christens 'Blood Rust', could easily be carried and transferred from person to person and the Earth itself could be threatened. Shortly afterwards the Blood Rust claims Pommer as its first victim but not before he manages to telephone agent John Hand to warn him of the danger. Back to me:

Hero of the Week- Red Tornado

From Wiki, patched together by me:  Red Tornado was formed with the merger of two entities: an android body created by supervillain T. O. Morrow[2] and the Tornado Champion from the planet Rann. The Tornado Champion was the morally good part of a sentient tornado on Rann.  In 1968, Red Tornado appears at JSA headquarters on Earth-Two claiming to be the "original" Red Tornado. Although the JSA is suspicious, Red Tornado has all of Hunkel's memories. Morrow has other robots attack a museum and vaporize relics, and the JSA responds. Red Tornado, programmed to appear inept (and keep the JSA from realizing its true nature), exposes the JSA to the dust created by the vaporization and all except Doctor Fate fall into a coma. It then returns to Morrow's lair as programmed. Morrow's computer predicts that keeping Red Tornado active will allow Morrow to continue his criminal activity. Doctor Fate awakens the remaining JSA members from their coma, and Red Tornado betrays his fellow JSA members by telling them to use Morrow's energy weapons. The devices, rigged to explode, put the JSA and Red Tornado into a coma and Morrow returns to Earth-One to attack the Justice League.[8] He puts the JLA into comas twice: once with energy duplicates and a second time with energy duplicates of their deadliest enemies. Red Tornado (who was not incapacitated by the energy backfire on Earth-Two) travels to Earth-One and revives the JLA members, who capture Morrow. It returns to Earth-Two and revives the JSA, which admits Red Tornado to full membership in gratitude.[9][10]  Back to me now!

Space Ghost merch

In my Space Ghost research for a new issue of Xenorama, I found several Hanna-Barbera toys or whatever you would all this.  This would look cool, and I always think I would want such things, but then... it is just stuff.  Do I actually need it?  Probably not.  And where would I even find one?  Be that as it may, it sure is cool!  HB sure fell down on the job with merchandise in the sixties, they could have made tons more money with licensing.

Ace Frehley passed away today, due to a fall a few weeks ago.  He was the first lead guitarist I ever learned about, and he will always been one of my favorites.

I watched this homage/parody/love letter for the first time about nine and a half years ago, and enjoyed it then.  I recently watched it this year, and liked it more.

Hero of the Week- She-Dragon

She-Dragon (a.k.a. Amy Belcher) is a supporting character from Savage Dragon.  Amy was born with a disease caused by her Father's exposure to chemicals during the Vietnam war.  She was taken to the Creator, where she was both cured and transformed. Originally a villain, she reformed and became the She-Dragon. She is now back to her human self, thanks to the Freak-Out drug. Before back to me, that whole paragraph can from the Heroes Wiki and I had to correct tons of typos.  WOW.  Now back to me:

Do You Want Crying - Katrina and The Waves 1983

This was the follow up single to "Walking on Sunshine" and sadly, I never heard it until last year.  It's a great power pop gem.

661. The Mushroom People Attack! 1963

Here's a very interesting and effective horror movie from Toho.  I can't say I have watched it many times, but it will stay with you.

Sound of Horror (1964 or so)

From Wiki- Sound of Horror (Spanish: El sonido de la muerte) is a 1966 Spanish horror film directed by José Antonio Nieves Conde. In the Greek countryside, archaeologists Dr. Pete Asilov and Professor Andre detonate dynamite in an abandoned mountain cave, uncovering petrified eggs in the blasts. Taking one they fail to notice another had hatched, releasing a reptilian creature that vanishes. Andre lives in a nearby villa with his orphaned niece Maria and their superstitious Greek housekeeper Calliope, who warns Andre of the dangers of monsters and angry spirits in the mountain, which he ignores.Back to me:

Taurus from Equinox

Here is a great shot from the movie Equinox (1970 version, though it will be the same shot from the original).  It is a testament to the kids who made the movie, though.

Super Scary Count Floyd!

 From WIki-

Count Floyd is a fictional character featured in television and played by comic actor Joe Flaherty. He is a fictional horror host in the tradition of TV movie hosts on local television in both the United States and Canada.

The Count Floyd character originated on the Canadian sketch show SCTV, but also later appeared on The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley (clips of which were used on Cartoon Planet), as well as Rush’s Signals and Grace Under Pressure tours.  Back to me now!

655. Mail Order Mysteries... Solved!

Hero (?) of the Week- Damon Hellstrom

From Wiki-  Daimon Hellstrom was born in the fictional town of Greentown, Massachusetts. He is the son of Satan and a mortal woman named Victoria Wingate (his father was later retconned into a demon named Marduk Kurios).[12] Daimon and his younger sister, Satana, were trained by their father in the art of magic, tapping into the power granted them by their dark heritage. However, while Satana embraced her heritage, Daimon clung to his humanity.[13] When their mother discovered who her husband really was, she was driven insane. Daimon and Satana were separated and put in different homes after their mother was institutionalized and their father banished back to Hell. Daimon grew up in a Jesuit-run orphanage, never hearing a word from his father or sister. He became a professor of anthropology at St. Louis University. He then set himself up as an occult investigator and defender of humanity, battling dark arcane forces — primarily those of his father — under the name of the "Son of Satan", as a demonologist and exorcist.  In his first appearance, Daimon battled Satan and the Witch-Woman alongside the Ghost Rider.[14] Soon after that, he began a long association with the Defenders by helping them battle Asmodeus (the leader of the Sons of Satannish) and Satannish himself.[15] He also helped the Defenders battle the third incarnation of the Sons of the Serpent.[16] Later, alongside the Human Torch, he battled Dryminextes.[17] He then encountered Satana for the first time as an adult.[18] Alongside the Thing, he battled Kthara.[19] Alongside the Ghost Rider again, he battled the Challenger.[20] Hellstrom next battled the Possessor.[21] and now back to me!

Calvin and Hobbes Monday: 01-26-1986

According to the page I get these strips from, this is the first and only time we see a Spaceman Spiff toy, a very generic saucer.  Which is exactly where Calvin would get the idea.  The sarcastic alien was on all of the planets I visited as well.

Hex Girls show (we wish)

Yes, I love the Hex Girls, for a wide variety of reasons.  I would go to this show.

652. What Ghost and Mr. Chicken?

This is a fun movie, but it is very similar to a lot of Don Knotts' movies.  Not all of them, but a lot.

Equinox DVD title card

A short bit from Wiki, since we aren't gonna talk about the movie here this time, you can search the blog for more, though- Not long after its original theatrical release, the film was made available in abridged Super 8 film reels designed for home exhibition.[12]

Equinox was released on DVD in June 2006 as release 338 in the Criterion Collection, including both the theatrical version and Muren's original production, the first time the latter was officially released.[13]  It also featured an introduction by the film's champion Forrest J. Ackerman.[14]  I saw this in about 1974 for the first time.   And now back to me!

650. Reviewing the MAD MONSTER PARTY? from 1967

LOTL season 3 episode 13

Just started the final episode of the series.  It seems to me the producers had to know the series was over.  The loss of Spencer Milligan was too much- even for me as a kid I was kind of over the show.  One can tell the scripts had been written, or some of them since Uncle Jack acted just like his brother in many of the episodes.  The third season changed many things, probably too many things.  There were several good episodes, but too many new characters and menaces were added, plus many of the stories seemed like standard Saturday morning fare.  Not even Lulu was gonna save this season.

648. Wrestling isn't Fixed, it never was Broken! (book review)

This is such a great book that every fan should have it in their library.  It is mostly pure fun by the great Bill Apter.

Hero of the Week- The Savage Dragon

From Wiki- The Savage Dragon is the name of two superheroes created by Erik Larsen, published by Image Comics and taking place in the Image Universe. The comic initially follows the adventures of a superheroic police officer named the Dragon. The character first appeared as the Dragon in Graphic Fantasy #1 (June 1982) and first appeared as the "Savage Dragon" in Megaton #3 (February 1986),[1] before starring as the protagonist of the ongoing comic book series The Savage Dragon.

The Dragon is a large, finned, green-skinned humanoid whose powers include super-strength and an advanced healing factor. He is also an amnesiac: his earliest memory is awakening in a burning field in Chicago, Illinois. Thus, for most of the series, the origins of his powers and appearance are a mystery to readers. At the beginning of the series, he becomes a police officer under the legal name "Savage Dragon" and battles the mutant criminal "superfreaks" that terrorize Chicago. Ultimately, the Dragon is revealed to be the amnesiac Kurr, tyrannical emperor of the known universe. After sacrificing himself in the thirty-ninth volume Merging of Multiple Earths, the Dragon is succeeded by his son Malcolm Dragon as the Savage Dragon, who becomes the new protagonist of The Savage Dragon.
